Resistance of cold-exposed rats to aflatoxin

Summary Male rats kept at a temperature of 4°–5°C were refractory to a lethal dose of aflatoxin compared to animals at 20°–21°C which exhibited a high mortality and marked liver damage. It is suggested that this decreased susceptibility is mediated through a stimulated microsomal drug-metabolizing system in cold environment.     

Microsomal metabolism as a determinant of aflatoxin toxicity.

The evidences to incriminate the possible role of microsomal drug metabolizing system in aflatoxin toxicity in rat have been reviewed. It is suggested that an effective drug metabolism results in decreased acute toxicity and the products of metabolism are more carcinogenic than the native toxin to the rat liver.

Zusammenfassung Es wird gezeigt, dass bei geeigneten Verbindungen die Ausstossung der Methylengruppe im Massenspektrum eine bevorzugte Reaktionsweise darstellt. Diese Reaktionsweise gleicht derjenigen der Abgabe von Kohlenmonoxyd aus cyclischen Ketonen oder Chinonen.

Quarterly real GDP estimates for China and ASEAN4 with a forecast evaluation

The growing affluence of the East and Southeast Asian economies has come about through a substantial increase in their economic links with the rest of the world, the OECD economies in particular. Econometric studies that try to quantify these links face a severe shortage of high‐frequency time series data for China and the group of ASEAN4 (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand). In this paper we provide quarterly real GDP estimates for these countries derived by applying the Chow–Lin related series technique to annual real GDP series. The quality of the disaggregated series is evaluated through a number of indirect methods. Some potential problems of using readily available univariate disaggregation techniques are also highlighted. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
