Effect of sodium butyrate in combination with X0irradiation,chemotherapeutic and cyclic AMP stimulating agents on neuroblastoma cells in culture

Summary Sodium butyrate, X-irradiation, chemotherapeutic agents and cyclic AMP-stimulating agents caused reduction in the cell number (due to cell death and reduction in cell division) when added individually to mouse neuroblastoma cells in culture. However, the combination of sodium butyrate with X-irradiation, chemotherapeutic and cyclic AMP-stimulating agents produced a greater reduction in the cell number than that produced by the individual agents.     

Variation in the lactase dehydrogenase activity of the esophagus

Summary Quantitative assay and electrophroetic study of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) from various tissues of the opossum esophagus were performed. On the basis of expression of the LDH isozymes, we concluded that the smooth muscle of the body of the esophagus carry on more anaerobic glycolysis than the striated muscle. The smooth muscle of the gastroesophageal junction carry on both anaerobic as well aerobic glycolysis.Acknowledgments. Radioprotective effect of isopentenyladenosine in mice

Zusammenfassung (iPA) bewirkt bei Mäusen, die mit einer letalen Ganzkörperdosis bestrahlt wurden, einen Schutzeffekt. Diese Verlängerung der mittleren Überlebenszeit wird mit einer Dosierung von 0,01 bis 0,05 µg/g Körpergewicht erreicht.

Alternative regime switching models for forecasting inflation

US inflation appears to undergo shifts in its mean level and variability. We evaluate the performance of three useful models for capturing such shifts. The models studied are the Markov switching models, state space models with heavy‐tailed errors, and state space models with compound error distributions. Our study shows that all three models have very similar performance when evaluated in terms of the mean squared or mean absolute forecast errors. However, the latter two models are considerably more parsimonious, and easily beat the more profligately parameterized Markov switching models in terms of model selection criteria, such as the AIC or the SBC. Thus, these may serve as useful continuous alternatives to the popular discrete Markov switching models for capturing shifts in time series. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Anti-androgenic action of cyproterone acetate in the epididymis of the rhesus monkey

Summary Cyproterone acetate (1 M) inhibited the binding of labeled testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the caput and cauda epididymides of the rhesus monkey. The same concentration of the anti-androgen failed to inhibit androgen binding in the ductus deferens, prostate and seminal vesicles.The investigation was supported by financial assistance from the Indian Council of Medical Research and the University Grants Commission. Effect of sodium butyrate in combination with prostaglandin E1 and inhibitors of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase on human amelanotic melanoma cells in culture.

Sodium butyrate and cyclic AMP-stimulating agents (prostaglandin E1, papaverine, theophylline, and RO20-1724) caused reductions in the cell number (primarily due to reduction in cell division) when added individually to human melanoma cells in culture. However, the combination of sodium butyrate with one of the cyclic AMP-stimulating agents produced a marked reduction in cell number (primarily due to cell death).
