The introduced landhopper Arcitalitrus dorrieni (Hunt, 1925) has been recorded at various locations (woodlands, private gardens and garden centres, disused quarries) throughout the island of Guernsey, Channel Is. Landhoppers were present in the leaf litter of most of the deciduous and coniferous woodlands with one exception. Although it possessed a well developed litter layer, the oak/mixed woodland at Fauxquets valley was devoid of landhoppers. Landhopper populations were less dense in confierous cf. deciduous, leaf litter. Generally the population density of landhoppers was low (21–300 individual m-2) compared with other UK sites (due possibly to the study coinciding with the driest summer for 19 years), but was related to the depth of the litter layer. There was also a direct relationship between the total copper content of the leaf litter/soil and landhopper population density even allowing for different litter thickness. While locating an actual original introduction site is problematic, the date of introduction, for reasons discussed in the text, is likely to have been between the early 1900s and 1950.  相似文献

We describe the final instars of two tropical Sphingidae caterpillars – Eumorpha phorbas and Eumorpha labruscae – from Area de Conservacion Guanacaste, northwestern Costa Rica, whose anal horn has become a posterior eyespot structure capable of rapid palpitation. When approached or harassed, the caterpillars palpitate this eyespot and produce the effect of a blinking vertebrate eye. We propose that this “blinking” is an extension of eye mimicry or at least draws attention to the eyespot, functioning to startle or intimidate would-be predators. As snakes lack eyelids and do not blink, this suggests that the blinking eye represents a more generalized (or possibly mammalian) eye. Eyespot “blinking” is probably controlled by the same musculature used to wave the anal horn in earlier instars. The extent to which this eyespot is perceived as a blinking eye, and the degree of protection from the caterpillars’ suite of potential predators, remain to be discovered.  相似文献

Deep-water epibenthic/suprabenthic species of Amphipoda were studied in the Catalan Sea (north-western Mediterranean) at depths from 389 to 1859 m. In four cruises 20 samples were effected during 1991–1992, covering four different seasonal periods (March, April, July and December). A minimum total of 82 species was collected. Ampelisca uncinata and Eusirus leptocarpus were newly recorded as components of the Mediterranean fauna while three other species collected (Bathymedon sp. A, Autonoe sp. and Rhachotropis cf. gracilis) had distinct possibilities to be new species. The Gammaridae Carangoliopsis spinulosa and the Oedicerotidae Synchelidium maculatum were the two main dominant species on the upper slope level (389-506 m). On the middle slope (between 549-601 m), dominance by any few species was not apparent; the Eusiridae Rhachotropis glabra and R. caeca together with Bathymedon acutifrons, Scopelocheirus hopei and Andaniexis mimonectes were the most abundant species. On the lower slope, at depth below 1000 m, R. caeca was the largely dominant species. The highest species richness (ST) was reported at intermediate depths over the middle slope (63 species), decreasing with depth increase, and being particularly low at 1808–1859 m (19 species). Total amphipod densities were also higher at the upper and middle slope levels (1760.2–2613.9 amphipods/1000 m3) than below 1000 m (376.4–679.2 amphipods/1000 m3). The low swimming coefficients (Kt) of bathyal Gammaridea, ranging between 0 and 0.336, indicate their relationship to the water-sediment interface although interespecific differences in Kt in relation to species size were also reported. Almost all the dominant amphipods had recruits (=smallest juveniles) in two or three of the three seasons sampled (mainly in March and December), and the smallest juveniles were often only abundant in two of these seasons. This indicates that most species had more than one generation per year, probably suggesting bivoltinism, a commonly adopted biological strategy among intertidal, littoral and shallow water amphipods, as the commonest strategy adopted by the mid-bathyal amphipods in our study.  相似文献

The presence of the landhopper Arcitalitrus dorrieni (Hunt) is reported on the island of Colonsay, Inner Hebrides. It is widely distributed there amongst deciduous leaf litter in forested areas but also occurs in bracken litter and scrub grassland. The species is an introduction from Australia, doubtless transported inadvertently among plants brought to the gardens at Colonsay House. It is, however, not restricted to the ornamental plantings but has colonized native woodland. Maximum population density recorded under leaf litter was 680 m2. Amphipods avoid waterlogged or dry situations preferring to burrow in moist soil under litter from deciduous trees. Coniferous woodlands are more sparsely colonized. Rate of spread (minimum) from the original locus is calculated at c. 25 m/year. Arcitalitrus may prefer to eat sycamore leaves (cf. oak, beech). Ovigerous females are reported for May but no evidence exists for a release of young any earlier in the year. Immature amphipods seem to live more covert lives in the soil beneath the superficial litter layer. Eggs are relatively large and few in number. Amphipods may avoid ants but may have a mite living in phoretic or ectoparasitic association.  相似文献

There are few in situ observations of deep-sea macrofauna, due to the remoteness of this ecosystem. Visual surveys conducted for marine management by MAREANO, (marine area database for Norwegian waters) and the petroleum industry (by SERPENTS, scientific and environmental remotely operated vehicle partnership using existing industrial technology) have provided unique material of visual information from large areas in the Norwegian Sea. The distribution, density and behaviour of the deep-sea amphipod Neohela monstrosa (Boeck, 1861) is described based on videos and samples from the Norwegian Sea. This amphipod is common on mud bottoms at 200–2181 m depth in the area. Dense communities were found in stands of the arctic sea pen Umbellula encrinus at more than 1000 m depth where temperatures were below 0° C. The mean density of N. monstrosa observed for larger areas was 4/100 m2 but densities of 15–36 individuals per m2 were found in local patches. It is domicolous which is characteristic of the superfamily Corophiida and digs burrows in soft muddy bottoms primarily by using large shovel-like gnathopods to scoop the sediment out. The amphipod was observed pushing and rolling sediment balls out of its burrow, which were probably held together with amphipod silk. It digs out an upper 3 to 4 cm wide burrow with a horizontal side burrow a couple of centimetres down. Neohela monstrosa appears to feeds on newly settled detritus that it collects from the surface sediment through the use of its long antennae while the burrow is mainly used for protection against predators such as demersal fish. Newly released juveniles are probably kept in the burrow for protection. Based on the local high density of N. monstrosa together with its habit of making long burrows, we suggest that there is significant bioturbation associated with the presence of N. monstrosa in deep sedimentary habitats of the Norwegian Sea, which likely provides an important ecosystem function.  相似文献

We investigated abundance variations and life history traits (body size, sex ratio, length–weight relationships and condition factor) of two species of annual fish (Austrolebias minuano Costa and Cheffe and Cynopoecilus fulgens Costa) in temporary ponds of southern Brazil. Six samples were taken from small temporary ponds during three annual seasons over 2 years (2008–2009). A total of 104 individuals of A. minuano and 433 individuals of C. fulgens were collected. The abundance of both species tended to decrease from autumn to spring in the 2 years. The overall sex ratio of A. minuano and C. fulgens were 1.0 male to 1.8 females and 1 male to 1.04 females, respectively. Juveniles of both species occurred only in autumn over the two years and no adult was observed during this season. While the length–weight relationship of A. minuano indicated hyperallometric growth, the relationship of C. fulgens indicated values close to isometric growth.  相似文献

Beach clam fisheries often provide an alternate income for traditional fishermen, but this activity is highly vulnerable to urbanization of coastal areas. Tivela mactroides is a beach clam commonly harvested in the Caribbean (Venezuela) and on the south‐eastern Brazilian coast. Only localized records on its spatial structure in size and abundance are available to support management of this clam. The present study showed that the spatial distribution in abundance and size of T. mactroides in Caraguatatuba Bay, state of São Paulo, Brazil, has both along‐ and across‐shore (intertidal and subtidal) components. The nature of this distribution should be taken into account in the design of further population or monitoring studies concerning this species. Clam density varied along‐shore, with a tendency towards higher numbers of individuals in the stations near the northern side of river mouths of this bay. Lower densities were related to the occurrence of sea‐stars and sand‐dollars. The intertidal and subtidal across‐shore distribution of clam abundance and size varied between and within areas (southern and northern). The individuals from the southern area were concentrated at intermediate tidal levels (0.2–0.6 m in relation to mean low water), whereas in the northern area the clams were more homogeneously distributed. The uppermost limit of their distribution was 0.8 m (southern) and 0.4 m (northern), and an upwards tendency towards increased size was more evident in the northern area. In the subtidal, abundance and individual size tended to increase from the deepest (4.5 m) to the shallowest (0.5 m) levels only in the southern area. Individual clams in the northern area tended to be smaller and more abundant than in the southern area. The species had an ontogenic distribution: small‐sized individuals were recorded only in the subtidal. Possible causes for these patterns and for the differences between areas (human exploitation, organic pollution, beach morphodynamics, differential recruitment, and adult–larvae interactions) are discussed, and specific studies are suggested to evaluate formally the proposed hypotheses.  相似文献

The distribution pattern of purpleback flying squid and the relationship between its abundance and environmental variables in the south-eastern Arabian Sea were analysed using a geographical information system (GIS) and a generalised additive model (GAM). Highest abundances were observed during December and January within 10 and 13°N and 71 and 72°E around the Lakshadweep Islands. The mean abundance in the area was 4.21 tonnes/km2 and the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) was estimated as 0.63 million tonnes. GAM indicated that very high squid abundance was associated with low values of dissolved oxygen (6.01–6.27 mg/L), sea surface temperature (28.03–28.62°C), pH (7.75–8.56), salinity (30.42–34.48 psu), chlorophyll-a (0.4–0.6 mg/m3), zooplankton biomass (0.23–0.64 mL/m3), and shallow 20°C isotherm (101.2–134.7 m) and mixed layer depth (17.8–29.8 m). As a carnivore from paralarval stages, S. oualaniensis depends on secondary and tertiary production to sustain its population for which primary production is used up. In the tropical Arabian Sea where temperature differences are not so pronounced, S. oualaniensis distribution was found to be related to a low but very narrow sea surface temperature (SST) band. There is sufficient fishable biomass in the area to possibly launch a new targeted oceanic squid fishery from the western seaboard of India.  相似文献

Project HABITATS was recently initiated in the Campos Basin (20.5–24° S), state of Rio de Janeiro, to assess biological impacts of petroleum exploration and exploitation on the continental shelf and slope of Brazil. Among species discovered in benthic samples from the area is the hydroid Monobrachium parasitum Mereschkowsky, 1877, occurring in an epibiotic association with the pelecypod mollusc Mendicula ferruginosa (Forbes, 1844): this is the first report of an association between the two species. Monobrachium parasitum has always been reported from cold waters, and is generally considered bipolar. This report records the occurrence of M. parasitum at lower latitudes, where they have seldom been collected: it is also the first account of this species from South America and the southwestern Atlantic. Moreover, the bathymetric distribution of M. parasitum is extended to a depth of 998 m. No previous records exist of hydroids from the Brazilian continental slope.  相似文献

Camponotus renggeri and C. rufipes are very abundant in Brazilian cerrado savannah, where they feed extensively on liquid rewards and commonly associate with plants bearing extrafloral nectaries and honeydew-producing insects. Here, we provide a qualitative and quantitative field account on the natural history and ecology of these two ant species. The study was carried out in a cerrado reserve in south-eastern Brazil across a rainy/hot season (summer) and a dry/cold season (winter). The ants were found in two vegetation physiognomies: all nests of C. rufipes were located in the cerrado sensu stricto (scrub of shrubs and trees, 3–8 m tall), whereas C. renggeri occurred mostly in the cerradão (forest with more or less merging canopy, 10–12 m tall). Both species nested in fallen or erect dead trunks, as well as underground. In addition, C. rufipes built nests using dead plant material arranged or not around shrub bases. Colonies of C. rufipes were generally more populous than those of C. renggeri, and both species had colonies with more than one dealated queen. Both species were active mainly at night and foraged for resources near their nests, mainly extrafloral nectar and hemipteran honeydew (aphids and mealybugs). The average size of the home ranges of C. renggeri in cerrado sensu stricto and cerradão varied from ≈ 2.8 to 4.0 m2 and apparently were not affected by season. In C. rufipes, however, foraging grounds in cerrado sensu stricto showed a twofold increase from dry/cold (≈ 4.5 m2) to rainy/hot season (≈ 9.8 m2). Our study highlights the importance of natural history data to understand the foraging ecology and role of these ants in cerrado savannah.  相似文献

Melanagromyza rosales, sp. nov., from Costa Rica is described and its natural history is summarized. Larvae are miners in leaves of Bromelia pinguin, a large terrestrial rosette plant. They form conspicuous longitudinal mines that may be over 1 m long. Adult emergence is virtually simultaneous for all individuals, probably triggered by temperature cues. Populations are low for many generations with brief periods of abundance.  相似文献

Larval instars of the myrmicine ant Strumigenys solifontis Brown were determined by measuring the head width under a stereomicroscope and examining the morphology, especially chaetotaxy, by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. This study found that the larval stage consisted of four instars, but the first and second instars were not distinguishable by their head widths. However, the four instars could be discriminated clearly by a combination of size measurement and observations on the chaetotaxy. Within a population, there are few larvae in the first instar because of its short period (only 1–2 days before moulting into the second instar) and the low oviposition rate of the queen. Therefore, the first-instar larva needs to be collected separately from other instars so that it is not missed.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of Arcitalitrus dorrieni (Hunt) was investigated over a period of 25 months at a deciduous and a coniferous forest site at Kylemore, Co. Galway, Ireland. The species has an annual, univoltine reproductive cycle with ovigerous females found throughout the year. Recruitment of juveniles begins in May–June with a peak of reproductive activity in August–September. The populations at each site show a bimodal size-distribution for most of the year, with a unimodal distribution in March, April and May. Mortality occurs exponentially, and the life-span is 20–22 months. Mean fecundity was 5·65 eggs per female and was dependent on female size, egg size and brood stage. Brood mortality was 37·5% at Addergoole and 29·8% at Tullywee Bridge.  相似文献

Although fiddler crabs are among the main faunal components in mangrove habitats, few studies have described the population structure and reproduction of tropical species. Such information is important for understanding their life cycle and ecology. In this study, the population structure and reproduction of Uca urvillei were studied at Costa do Sol, a tropical mangrove forest in Maputo Bay, southern Mozambique. Ten 1.0‐m2 squares were sampled during low tide periods, between January and December 2003. The population is characterized by normal size distributions, which are slightly skewed to the left. Males on average are larger than females. Males were more abundant than females and the monthly sex ratios were male‐biased. Juveniles were found year‐round but were less common in June and December. Both gonadosomatic index and frequency of ovigerous females showed that Uca urvillei breeds continuously with peaks in summer and a strong decrease in winter. Egg number was proportional to female size.  相似文献

Juvenile horseshoe crabs, Tachypleus tridentatus and Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda, with prosomal widths of between 11.5 and 102.5 mm, occur along Hong Kong's northwestern shoreline abutting Deep Bay where dissolved oxygen (DO) has been identified as the principal factor determining distribution and survival. Unreported upon hitherto, however, Tachypleus tridentatus occurred consistently in association with sea-grass (Halophila beccarii) beds, with DO concentrations of 8–14 mg·L?1, a median grain size of >180 μm, interstitial water contents of <36% (sediment wet weight) and organic contents of <3.2% (sediment dry weight). Most individuals occurred between 60 and 120 m down from the shoreline although there appeared to be a trend of down-shore migration in summer, possibly to alleviate thermal stress. No individuals were found at sediment temperatures ≤20°C, i.e. in sub-tropical Hong Kong's winter, when they adopt buried repose. Abundances of emerged T. tridentatus, peaking in November, were synchronized with interstitial salinities of 22–26‰ and averaged 1–2 individuals per 100 m2. Mean population density of T. tridentatus was 4–9 individuals per 100 m2. Only four individuals of C. rotundicauda were found in August and September, suggesting a recent dramatic decline in numbers. The natal crèche environment for juvenile horseshoe crabs in Hong Kong is deteriorating and threatening their survival.  相似文献

Summary

The tube-building amphipod Microdeutopus gryllotalpa Costa was successfully reared through several generations in the laboratory. Females produced young at six to eight day intervals, as many as eleven broods being produced during the two-month reproductive life of a single female in the laboratory. Brood numbers increased and decreased cyclically throughout the breeding period of any one female and a maximum of 58 young in a single brood was recorded. At 21°C young moulted at five-day intervals during their early instars and at about nine to ten day intervals in their later stages. Both sexes reached sexual maturity after the ninth moult, but males continued to differentiate morphologically after attaining sexual maturity.  相似文献

Larval ontogeny of the scarab Mecynorhina polyphemus was monitored throughout all instars, and larvae were weighed at 7-day intervals. Durations of the prepupal, pupal and postpupal stages were recorded. Larvae increase their body masses over 300 times during ontogeny. Male imagines are larger than females, and this is primarily a function of faster growth rates during instar III, resulting in significantly heavier larvae at the end of this instar. The durations of the three instars are not significantly different in males and females, but the duration of the prepupal and postpupal phases is significantly longer in males. There is a strong correlation in both sexes between maximal larval mass and the mass of the imago, but larval mass–imago mass scales with significantly different slopes in males and females. Male larvae must allocate increasingly more resources into production of cephalic horns with increments in larval mass, requiring differently proportioned pupal chambers.  相似文献

The total gill area and gill distribution of seven talitrid species taken from a variety of habitats have been studied. In the sandhoppers, Talitrus and Talorchestia, and in the landhopper, Arcitalitrus dorrieni, the greatest gill area is invested in the posterior gills (G6) whereas in the beachflea, Orchestia spp., G2 has the greatest area. Gills 3, 4 and 5 are characteristically small and G7 is consistently absent in all the species studied. Gill structure and deployment patterns are, in general, quite conservative within the Talitridae. The gills of A. dorrieni are, however, complex in shape and are more convoluted than in the other species studied.

Gill area/body dry weight relationships were established for each species and are compared with previously published data. The Talitridae show a reduction in total gill area compared with most aquatic amphipods. It was observed, however, that the slopes of the calculated regression lines were significantly different between the sandhopper and beachflea genera studied. The reduction in gill area within the Talitridae is discussed in relation to their colonization of land.  相似文献

Summary

Jonah crabs, Cancer borealis, were collected in October 1971, June 1973, and March and April 1974 during trawl surveys of the continental shelf of the mid-Atlantic Bight and the shelf and slope east of Beaufort, North Carolina. In 171 trawls made from the M/V Blesk, R/V Columbus Iselin, R/V Albatross IV and R/V Eastward, 1626 jonah crabs were captured. Crabs were contagiously distributed within a depth range of 20–400 m. Maximum abundance occurred within 150–400 m and 8–13·9°C.

Male crabs ranged from 12 to 175 mm in carapace width; females from 13 to 152 mm. Three modal size groups for males and females were recognized: 13–40 mm, 41–80 mm and 81–110 mm. There was a fourth group of male crabs over 110 mm width. Crabs 40 mm were most abundant at depths of 75–150 m; crabs 41–80 mm were not captured in depths < 150 m, but were the dominant group in strata > 150 m. Larger crabs (81–110 mm) occurred from 40 to 400 m and reached maximum numbers at 150–400 m. Male crabs ≥ 111 mm were found only in 150–400 m.

Male crabs predominated in June. Sex ratios (M:F) ranged from 1·1:1 to 17:1. In October the ratios ranged from 1:16 to 2·4:1. In March and April the ratios were 2·9:1 and 1·9:1, respectively. In most cases the ratios were significantly different from 1:1.

The species was actively moulting in June, but recent or incipient ecdysis was not observed in October. Only one recently moulted crab was noted in March.

Gonad development in June was related to size. Most crabs ? 80 mm width were undeveloped or only slightly developed. Mature gonads were seen only in crabs ≥ 100 mm width. Testes and vasa deferentia of most males ≥ 150 mm were well to very well developed. No ripe ovaries were seen and no ovigerous individuals were taken in June. One berried female was observed in March.

The incidence of fouling organisms on crabs reflected the moulting history of the crabs. Sixty per cent of crabs in anecdysis and 14% of those in postecdysis were fouled. The predominant organism was the lepadid barnacle, Poecilasma inaequilaterale Pilsbry, which was attached to the gills in the branchial chamber.  相似文献
