Abstract:This paper reports a study on the formation mechanism of TiC particles by the change of free energy of possible reactions in combustion synthesis of Al_Ti_C system as well as DTA curves. The results show that TiC, Al 4C 3 and TiAl 3 may be obtained during the process of reaction. Owing to the exothermic reactions of Al 4C 3 and TiAl 3 formation, the synthesis of TiC tends to complete. A major factor for obtaining TiC/Al composite without by_product is the complete transformation of Al 4C 3 and TiAl 3 to TiC.
