Cultural Differences between Chinese and Western Performance Spaces

By means of contrastive analysis, the paper discusses the essential cultural differences between China and the West that have determined the development of performance spaces. It provides a convenient tool for understanding patterns of Chinese and Western performance spaces. General cultural differences as well as diffe rences in the concept of space and time, drama psychology, drama concept, ethics and environment etc., all give rise to the differences in performance spaces. Nevertheless, it is the general cultural differences that constitute the most important factor. The study on cultural differences and the emergence of performance spaces would help us create new patterns of performance space.
