Bovine microvascular endothelial cells of separate morphology differ in growth and response to the action of interferon-γ

Five cell types recently isolated from the bovine corpus luteum differed in their epithelioid morphology and their cytoskeleton, but shared common criteria of microvascular endothelial cells^1,2. To give strong evidence for the separate entity, the growth rate of the 5 phenotypically different cells was studied. They were seeded at low density on day 0. Most of these cells were treated with 200 to 1000 U recombinant bovine interferon- (IFN-) for 3 days. The untreated remainder served as controls. Cell counts were made for all cultures on days 4, 7, 10 and 13. morphology: 13 d after treatment with IFN- senescent cells as well as intact cells occurred in cultures of cell types 1 to 4. Cultures of cell type 5 were apparently unchanged and resembled their untreated counterparts. Desminpositive cells in cultures of cell type 2 developed cell processes. Growth rate: In the absence of IFN-, the growth rate was high for cell types 3 and 4, moderate for cell type 1, and low for cell types 2 and 5. The presence of IFN- caused anti-proliferative effects. These were higher for cell types 3 and 4 than for cell types 1 and 2. IFN- could be cytotoxic on cell type 3. In contrast, the cytokine tended to support the cell growth of cell type 5. These findings substantiate the postulate that endothelial cells exhibiting separate morphology in culture also function differently.     

Energy flow and community structure in freshwater ecosystems

The goal of this article is twofold: 1) It aims at providing an overview on some major results obtained from energy flow studies in individuals, populations, and communities, and 2) it will also focus on major mechanisms explaining community structures. The basis for any biological community to survive and establish a certain population density is on the one hand energy fixation by primary producers together with adequate nutrient supply and the transfer of energy between trophic levels (bottom-up effect). On the other hand, predator pressures may strongly control prey population densities one or more trophic levels below (top-down effect). Other interpopulation effects include competition, chemical interactions and evolutionary genetic processes, which further interact and result in the specific structuring of any community with respect to species composition and population sizes.     

商标图象库检索的多层次结构方法

基于商标图象库应用背景和具体特征,提出一种商标图象检索的多层次方法．图象预处理阶段采用人机交互方式下３种半自动方法提取商标图象各区域对象．检索首先采用字符串匹配方法和传统数据库查询技术,动态减少图象搜索范围;在图象区域规格化下,相继用最小约束矩和基于Ｈａｕｓｄｏｒｆ距离的相似性函数度量商标相似性程度,具有平移、旋转和尺度变换下的不变性和一定的抗噪声能力．实验结果表明,该方法有效和实用．     

电聚合吡咯膜修饰的葡萄糖氧化酶电极

自制的铂丝电极经铂化处理后,将葡萄糖氧化酶与单体吡咯用循环伏安法共聚合到电极上,铂化后电极表面积的增大增加了固定的酶量,同时也增大了电极对Ｈ２Ｏ２的催化能力,使电极对葡萄糖的响应电流增大到７．５ｍＡ／（ｍｏｌ·Ｌ＾－１）,还测试了聚合液中酶浓度、ｐＨ值和聚合时间等因素对电极特性的影响。     

水分在季节性冻土中的运动

季节性冻土是一种冰水共存的特殊土水体系,在分析冻土中水分运动的驱动力及其影响因素,冻土介质的物理特性（热特性和水力特性）及其参数测定方法的基础上,综述了水分在冻土中运动的基本规律及定量研究水分运动的试验与数值模拟方法。     

茶叶矿质元素浸出量与茶叶冲泡时间及冲泡次数的关系

研究了茶汤中茶叶１０种矿质元素（Ｋ、Ｃａ、Ｍｇ、Ｐ、Ａｌ、Ｆｅ、Ｍｎ、Ｓｒ、Ｂａ、Ｚｎ）的浸出量与茶叶冲泡次数以及冲泡时间的关系．结果表明：（１）茶叶中１０种元素的浸出量与茶叶冲泡次数之间具有显著的指数函数相关,相关方程为ｙ＝ａｅ－ｂｘ,１０种元素的浸出量与茶叶冲泡时间之间具有显著的对数函数相关,相关方程为ｙ＝ａ＋ｂｌｇｘ,各元素在两方程中的相关显著性均为α＜０．０１;（２）性质相近的元素,如Ｂａ与Ｓｒ在上述函数中的变化行为更为相近;（３）元素Ｋ、Ｚｎ、Ａｌ、Ｍｇ浸出比在３０％以上,可认为是易浸出元素,而元素Ｍｎ、Ｆｅ、Ｓｒ、Ｂａ、Ｃａ的浸出比低于３０％,可认为是较难浸出元素;（４）茶叶与茶汤之比为１∶１０,冲泡水温１００℃,冲泡时间２分钟,３泡茶汤已能充分利用茶叶中常见的人体营养元素Ｋ、Ｍｇ、Ｐ、Ｍｎ、Ｚｎ,元素浸出量与总浸出量之比在６０％以上．     

青海高原春小麦籽粒蛋白质积累规律研究

分析了阿勃,青春５３３,青农４６９、青农４５２等四个春小麦品种（品系）在青海西宁地区籽粒蛋白质相对含量的变化规律和蛋白质绝对含量的积累进程,结果表明,从开花至成熟,籽粒蛋白质相对含量的变化呈“Ｕ”型曲线,并以花后籽粒发育初期含量最花,花后３１天左右是该地区春小麦籽粒中蛋白质相对含量最低的时期。不同品种在花后不同时期蛋白质相对含量各不相同;籽粒蛋白质绝对含量的积累过程呈“Ｓ”形曲线,可用概率转换方程     

Nα-quinaldyl-L-arginine·HCl,a new defensive alkaloid fromSubcoccinella-24-punctata (Coleoptera,Coccinellidae)

The isolation of N-quinaldyl-L-arginine·HCl (1) from the CoccinellidaeSubcoccinella-24-punctata is reported. The structure, first established on the basis of the analysis of the spectral properties of1, has been confirmed by synthesis. The alkaloid is of endogenous origin and markedly deterrent to ants.     

Molecular evidence for increased hematopoietic proliferation in the spleen of the b/b laboratory rat

The splenomegaly and the appearance of a significant number of CFU-E (erythroid colony-forming units) and BFU-E¹ (erythroid burst-forming units) in the Belgrade laboratory rat (b/b) spleen prompted us to analyse further the molecular evidence for increased hematopoietic proliferation in the b/b spleen. Messenger RNAs (mRNAs) specific for globins, proteins for iron transport and deposition and the band 3 protein were used in rat erythropoietic tissues as markers for proliferation and erythroid differentiation. In the b/b spleen, all mRNAs analysed display an erythroid-specific pattern of expression. This analysis also revealed an enhanced level of mRNA for ferritin in the +/b spleen, whereas erythrocyte-specific mRNA production was normal.     

Antiviral activities of anthraquinones,bianthrones and hypericin derivatives from lichens

The antiviral activities of some naturally occurring anthraquinones bianthrones, and hypericin derivatives were compared by the end-point CPE (viral cytopathic effects) method and plaque assays. Under optimal conditions of exposure to light, hypericin, 7,7-dichlorohypericin and 5,7-dichloroemodin exhibited strong inhibitory activity against HSV-1 (herpes simplex virus type 1) in both assays. Partial inactivation of the virus was shown by emodin, 7-chloroemodin and 7-chloro-1-O-methylemodin; the bianthrones and other anthraquinones were found to be inactive. Antiviral activity appeared to be, positively correlated with increasing substitution of chlorine in the anthraquinone structure. In the absence of light, only hypericin and 7,7-dichlorohypericin displayed detectable activity.
