The effect of intraventricular thyroxine administration on body temperature in dogs at rest and during physical exercise

Summary Infusion of 1 g thyroxine into the left cerebral ventricle of the dog did not change body temperature at rest, but it caused significantly higher increases in T_re during physical exercise.     

Dyeing in the Eighteenth Century

The concept of a technical frontier in branches of experimental measurement, such as the resolution of the microscope, angular measure and time telling, has been around for more than 60 years. The purpose of this brief paper is to identify the technical frontier operating on the achromatic astronomical telescope, where a limiting factor of the resolution of fine detail was the quality of the optical glass available. The achromatically corrected objective is formed from two kinds of glass, the common crown glass and the heavy clear flint glass or lead glass. This last was difficult to make homogeneous, that is without regions of different density, and therefore different refraction and dispersion. Unusually, optical glass had to pass a second frontier, this time placed on the whole glass industry by the English Government in the form of excise duty, administered with a bureaucratic efficiency that effectively stopped, in around 1800, the making of optical glass suitable for the serious astronomical telescopes. The result of the tax imposition was to delay the English production of improved optical glass for more than 80 years.     

Mutations in VPS33B, encoding a regulator of SNARE-dependent membrane fusion, cause arthrogryposis-renal dysfunction-cholestasis (ARC) syndrome

ARC syndrome (OMIM 208085) is an autosomal recessive multisystem disorder characterized by neurogenic arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, renal tubular dysfunction and neonatal cholestasis with bile duct hypoplasia and low gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (gGT) activity. Platelet dysfunction is common. Affected infants do not thrive and usually die in the first year of life. To elucidate the molecular basis of ARC, we mapped the disease to a 7-cM interval on 15q26.1 and then identified germline mutations in the gene VPS33B in 14 kindreds with ARC. VPS33B encodes a homolog of the class C yeast vacuolar protein sorting gene, Vps33, that contains a Sec1-like domain important in the regulation of vesicle-to-target SNARE complex formation and subsequent membrane fusion.     

Loss of cyclophilin D reveals a critical role for mitochondrial permeability transition in cell death

Mitochondria play a critical role in mediating both apoptotic and necrotic cell death. The mitochondrial permeability transition (mPT) leads to mitochondrial swelling, outer membrane rupture and the release of apoptotic mediators. The mPT pore is thought to consist of the adenine nucleotide translocator, a voltage-dependent anion channel, and cyclophilin D (the Ppif gene product), a prolyl isomerase located within the mitochondrial matrix. Here we generated mice lacking Ppif and mice overexpressing cyclophilin D in the heart. Ppif null mice are protected from ischaemia/reperfusion-induced cell death in vivo, whereas cyclophilin D-overexpressing mice show mitochondrial swelling and spontaneous cell death. Mitochondria isolated from the livers, hearts and brains of Ppif null mice are resistant to mitochondrial swelling and permeability transition in vitro. Moreover, primary hepatocytes and fibroblasts isolated from Ppif null mice are largely protected from Ca2+-overload and oxidative stress-induced cell death. However, Bcl-2 family member-induced cell death does not depend on cyclophilin D, and Ppif null fibroblasts are not protected from staurosporine or tumour-necrosis factor-alpha-induced death. Thus, cyclophilin D and the mitochondrial permeability transition are required for mediating Ca2+- and oxidative damage-induced cell death, but not Bcl-2 family member-regulated death.     

An immunofluorescent method for identification of isolated thyrotropic cells

Summary A sensitive and specific immunofluorescent method for identification of thyrotropic cells was developed. The TSH-producing cells were found to be heterogenic in their morphology and intensity of staining.     

Standard molar enthalpy of formation of morin studied by rotating-bomb combustion calorimetry

Flavonols are plant pigments that are ubiquitous in nature. Morin and other related plant flavonols have come into recent prominence because of their usefulness as anticancer, anti-tumor, anti-AIDS, and other important therapeutic activities of significant potency and low systemic toxicity. The heat of combustion of morin (molecular formula, C₁₅H₁₀O₇·H₂O) in oxygen was measured by a rotating-bomb type combustion calorimeter, the standard molar enthalpy of combustion of morin at T = 298.15 K was determined to be Δ_c H _m^⦵ (C₁₅H₁₀O₇·H₂O, s) = −(5 937.99 ± 2.99) kJ · mol⁻¹. The derived standard molar enthalpy of the formation of morin in solid powder state at T = 298.15 K, Δ_f H _m^⦵ (C₁₅H₁₀O₇·H₂O, s), was −(1 682.12 ± 3.58) kJ · mol⁻¹, which provide an accurate data of the stability of morin to the pharmacy and pharmacology. 水热法合成磁性纳米微球NiFe2O4及其电化学稳定性分析

采用Ni(NO₃)₂·6H₂O和FeCl₃·6H₂O混合水热法合成纳米NiFe₂O₄粉体, 通过X射线衍射（XRD）和透射电子显微镜（TEM）对样品进行表征, 并对其进行充放电循环测试. 实验结果表明： 生成的纳米NiFe₂O₄粉体为准晶型, 呈球状, 结晶度高, 晶型完好, 粒径分布均匀; 第1,30,50,70次的充放电比容量分别为（997,1 019）,(726,750.2),(560.9,578.4),(514.8,528.2)(mA·h)/g, 表明NiFe₂O₄具有较好的电化学稳定性.     

Inhibition of Y-chromosome loop formation in primary spermatocyte nuclei ofDrosophila hydei by trimethylphosphate

Summary Primary spermatocyte nuclei of either late 3 instar larvae or newly eclosed adult males ofD. hydei contain lampbrush loops which are associated with Y-chromosome fertility factors. Formation of the loops is inhibited by continual larval development on food medium containing 0.008 M, or more, trimethylphosphate (TMP) and is accompanied by disruption to spermiogenesis.
