Larval ontogeny of the scarab Mecynorhina polyphemus was monitored throughout all instars, and larvae were weighed at 7-day intervals. Durations of the prepupal, pupal and postpupal stages were recorded. Larvae increase their body masses over 300 times during ontogeny. Male imagines are larger than females, and this is primarily a function of faster growth rates during instar III, resulting in significantly heavier larvae at the end of this instar. The durations of the three instars are not significantly different in males and females, but the duration of the prepupal and postpupal phases is significantly longer in males. There is a strong correlation in both sexes between maximal larval mass and the mass of the imago, but larval mass–imago mass scales with significantly different slopes in males and females. Male larvae must allocate increasingly more resources into production of cephalic horns with increments in larval mass, requiring differently proportioned pupal chambers.  相似文献

Larval instars of the myrmicine ant Strumigenys solifontis Brown were determined by measuring the head width under a stereomicroscope and examining the morphology, especially chaetotaxy, by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. This study found that the larval stage consisted of four instars, but the first and second instars were not distinguishable by their head widths. However, the four instars could be discriminated clearly by a combination of size measurement and observations on the chaetotaxy. Within a population, there are few larvae in the first instar because of its short period (only 1–2 days before moulting into the second instar) and the low oviposition rate of the queen. Therefore, the first-instar larva needs to be collected separately from other instars so that it is not missed.  相似文献

Abstract

Parapsyllaephagus Adulticolus Robinson (CHALCIDIDAE: Encyrtinae) is an endoparasite of the adults of Psylla melanoneura Förster and Psylla subferrigenea Edwards. The life histories and biology of the hosts and parasite are described. Parapsyllaephagus adulticolus has five larval instars, which feed selectively upon the developing internal genitalia of the host at first, and eventually, as the final instar, upon the whole of the abdominal viscera. Pupation within the psyllid is followed by emergence of the adult parasite through the posterior dorsal surface of the abdomen of the host. The effect of these activities upon the migration of the adult psyllid from a winter shelter plant to a summer host plant is discussed and a relationship between the stimulus to migrate and the state of development of the internal genitalia is postulated. Some aspects of the orientation of the parasite larva within the host and the phenomenon of larval reversal are discussed.  相似文献

Summary

The life history of the African grasshopper Ornithacris turbida (Walker) was studied under controlled laboratory conditions. No phase variation was observed between isolated and crowded stock in respect of colour, morphometrics, weight of hatchlings or fledglings. All the females reared in isolation Had seven nymphal instars but in the case of the isolated males the majority had six but some had seven nymphal instars. This variation was also observed in the crowded stock for both males and females.

In isolation the mean nymphal life of 15 females was 78·7 ± 3·2 days, the mean for nine males having six instars was 59·9 ± 3·2 days and for five males having seven instars the mean nymphal life was 74·6 ± 3·8 days. Overall the nymphal life for the insects reared in crowds was slightly shorter, but no attempt was made to separate the insects having six or seven instars.

The stripes in the compound eye correlated with the number of nymphal instars. Colour changes in the compound eye coincided with overall body colour changes and maturation.

The mean maturation period of females reared in isolation was 101 days, varying from 72 to 158 days. The mean maturation period of the crowded females, estimated by the collection of the first egg-pod, was 73 days with a range of 62 to 84 days; when estimated by the collection of egg-pods averaging one per female it varied with the cage from 91 to 114 days. This suggests that maturation in the crowded females was quicker.

The isolated females lived longer than ones reared in crowded conditions, and laid more egg-pods. There was, however, no difference in the number of eggs per pod or their hatchability between crowded and isolated stock. In both cases 76% of the total number of eggs hatched. Hence overall the isolated females had a greater fecundity than those reared in crowds.

The average weight of a single hopper from isolated parents was 15·5 mg and that from crowded parents was 14·0 mg.  相似文献

Summary

Statements that have attempted to express the relationship between the sizes of successive arthropodan instars are examined with reference to published data on larval decapod crustaceans.

The conclusions reached are (a) that ‘Brooks's Law’, which simply states that the lengths of successive instars form an exponential series, generally holds good in decapod larvae, (b) that ‘Przibram's Rule’, stating that the weight increase between instars is always by some power of 2, is not supported by the observed length changes, and (c) that Gurney's suggestion that growth factors in decapod larvae do not normally exceed about 1·5 is not applicable to the order as a whole, but may be valid for some sub-groups within it.  相似文献

The biology and immature stages of Pagyris ulla (Hewitson, [1857]) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Ithomiini) are described for the first time. The species’ host plant is established to be Brugmansia candida Pers. (Solanaceae). The life cycle from eggs to adult under laboratory conditions and ambient temperature took approximately 47 days, and the larvae passed through five instars. The larvae are gregarious, feed at night, and rest during the day in nests made by joining leaves near the apex of the plant stem.  相似文献

A new species of Mesabolivar is described from Brazilian forests: Mesabolivar delclaroi. The mating behaviour, postembryonic development, number of egg sacs and eggs, birth rate, number of instars, developmental time until adulthood, sex ratio and size of cephalothorax (per instar) were recorded. The sexual behaviour was described and categorized into four steps: courtship, pre-copulation, copulation and post-copulation. After hatching, individuals presented five instars until maturity. The mean number of eggs (42 ± 16.6) and live births (31.5 ± 3.4) of the first egg sac were significantly greater than that of a second one (23.8 ± 3.8, and 19.25 ± 3.9, respectively). The developmental time from birth to adulthood (130.8 ± 9.6 days) did not differ significantly between egg sacs produced (128.61 ± 11.1). The size of the cephalothorax did not differ among adults or between sexes. The sex ratio revealed a shift in favour of females (4: 3).  相似文献

Summary

The life-history of Schistocerca pallens (Thunberg) has been studied under controlled laboratory conditions.

Both isolated and crowded stocks passed through six nymphal instars, with which the number of eye-stripes in the compound eye correspond.

The mean length of nymphal life of isolated individuals was 64·8 days for males and 67·1 days for females. Mean duration of nymphal life of individuals reared in crowds was 60·1 days irrespective of sex.

The mean time elapsing between the last ecdysis and the first oviposition for isolated females was 32·8 days. Each female laid an average of 6·36 egg-pods with an average of 57·8 days. Each female laid an average of 6·36 egg-pods with an average of 57·8 eggs por pod; of these 63·3% hatched.

Crowded females laid their first egg-pod on the seventeenth day. They laid an average of 14·44 egg-pods per female with a mean of 60·70 eggs per pod, of which 77·58% hatched. There was no significant difference in fecundity between females grown at the two rearing densities, but there was a great difference in fertility.

There was no difference in hatchling weight between the two rearing densities.

No significant chromatic or behavioural variations occurred in relation to isolation or crowding, but morphometrics showed differences associated with rearing density.  相似文献

Despite being taxonomically and phylogenetically informative, the morphology of the immature stages of cicadas has received comparatively superficial attention. One reason for this is the difficulty of positively identifying immature stages, particularly as these stages are fossorial. We present a method for identifying cicada exuviae using DNA sequence data and describe a set of characters and character states for the final instar nymph of Quintilia carinata (Thunberg). The identification of immature stages using molecular methods will increase our knowledge of African cicadas, allowing for the initiation of future phylogenetic and ecological comparisons.  相似文献

Abstract

Studies on the biology of Toxoptera aurantii (Boy.) showed that populations of the aphid contain females only, and that reproduction is parthenogenetic and viviparous and occurs exclusively on the undersurface of flush leaves. The aphid is described and a key is drawn for the various instars. The development of the aphid is temperature-dependent but at the optimum temperature it takes 6 days to become adult. The incidence of alates in populations is influenced both by high aphid density and leaf age.  相似文献

We studied the postembryonic development from hatching to the adult stage and determined population parameters of Alpaida veniliae. It is one of the most abundant species of the orb-weaving guild of the spider community of soybean crops in Buenos Aires province, Argentina. The first three instars occurred inside the egg sac, and instar IV (spiderlings) started the dispersion from it. The female of Alpaida veniliae achieved greater adult size and adult longevity than the male. Mean fecundity, mean number of egg sacs per female, mean number of eggs per egg sac, as well as the net reproductive rate, the intrinsic rate of increase (r), the generation time (T), and the reproductive values (V x) of three cohorts were determined under laboratory conditions, indicating a high capacity for growth. Their biological and ecological attributes indicate the importance of conservation of this predator as a natural enemy of soybean crop pests.  相似文献

Low-density grasshopper populations were sampled at 15 pairs of rangeland sites in south central Idaho. One site of each pair had not been grazed by livestock for at least 10 years. Grazed sites were managed under normal grazing regimes established by the Bureau of Land Management. Mean grasshopper density was higher on ungrazed sites than on grazed sites. Proportions of Melanoplus sanguinipes were higher on ungrazed sites than on grazed sites and were higher on annual grasslands than on other vegetation types. Effects of grazing appeared to be independent of vegetation type. Proportions of Comhpocerinae, a subfamily of grasshoppers that feeds almost exclusively on grasses, were affected by vegetation type, but not grazing. Crested wheatgrass seedings supported the highest proportions of Gomphocerinae. Proportions of Oedipodinae were affected by grazing and vegetation type. Higher proportions of Oedipodinae were found on grazed sites than on ungrazed sites, and on sagebrush/grass sites than on annual grasslands. Results indicate that livestock grazing during drought conditions tends to reduce grasshopper populations in southern Idaho rangeland.  相似文献

Summary

The oak leaf miners P. quercifoliella and P. harrisella were encountered at first generation densities of 40 and 48 mines per 1000 leaves in 1968 and 1969 and second generation densities of 179 and 211 mines per 1000 leaves. The 1969 densities for the two generations of P. maestingella on beech were 54 and 118 mines per 1000 leaves. The mines on oak were found to be aggregated on certain trees but the reason for this was not discovered. There was also aggregation on certain leaves within a tree.

The moths had two generations of adults per year at Dunham, the first generation mines appearing on the leaves in June and the second generation mines in August. P. maestingella seemed to be slightly in advance of the oak species.

The sampling data provided estimates of the mortality through 1969. Larval interference and mine damage caused negligible mortality. Death due to unknown factors figured prominently in the early instars but in the later instars, especially during the second generation, parasitism was important. Leaf browning was an added source of mortality in the second generation as was overwintering.

Fifteen species of hymenopterous parasites were bred from Phyllonorycter on oak and eight from P. maestingella on beech. Among these were some new host records. T. ecus was the most common first generation parasite of oak mines and C. nephereus. E. latreillei, S. sericeicornis, C. diallus and C. vittatus figured prominently in the second generation parasite complex. E. cilla was the commonest parasite of both generations of P. maestingella.  相似文献

The Malpighian tubules in female nymphs and adults of Pteronarcys californica Newport are larger and whiter than in males. This difference is detectable in nymphs as small as 300 mg in live weight (final instar nymphs weigh 800 to 1600 mg depending on sex), and is most pronounced in late nymphs and adults. These differences are thought to be related to the increased excretory load imposed by the synthesis of ooplasm in the late female nymph and adult.      相似文献

Summary

The tube-building amphipod Microdeutopus gryllotalpa Costa was successfully reared through several generations in the laboratory. Females produced young at six to eight day intervals, as many as eleven broods being produced during the two-month reproductive life of a single female in the laboratory. Brood numbers increased and decreased cyclically throughout the breeding period of any one female and a maximum of 58 young in a single brood was recorded. At 21°C young moulted at five-day intervals during their early instars and at about nine to ten day intervals in their later stages. Both sexes reached sexual maturity after the ninth moult, but males continued to differentiate morphologically after attaining sexual maturity.  相似文献
