We evaluate forecasting models of US business fixed investment spending growth over the recent 1995:1–2004:2 out‐of‐sample period. The forecasting models are based on the conventional Accelerator, Neoclassical, Average Q, and Cash‐Flow models of investment spending, as well as real stock prices and excess stock return predictors. The real stock price model typically generates the most accurate forecasts, and forecast‐encompassing tests indicate that this model contains most of the information useful for forecasting investment spending growth relative to the other models at longer horizons. In a robustness check, we also evaluate the forecasting performance of the models over two alternative out‐of‐sample periods: 1975:1–1984:4 and 1985:1–1994:4. A number of different models produce the most accurate forecasts over these alternative out‐of‐sample periods, indicating that while the real stock price model appears particularly useful for forecasting the recent behavior of investment spending growth, it may not continue to perform well in future periods. The paper develops an oil price forecasting technique which is based on the present value model of rational commodity pricing. The approach suggests shifting the forecasting problem to the marginal convenience yield, which can be derived from the cost‐of‐carry relationship. In a recursive out‐of‐sample analysis, forecast accuracy at horizons within one year is checked by the root mean squared error as well as the mean error and the frequency of a correct direction‐of‐change prediction. For all criteria employed, the proposed forecasting tool outperforms the approach of using futures prices as direct predictors of future spot prices. Vis‐à‐vis the random‐walk model, it does not significantly improve forecast accuracy but provides valuable statements on the direction of change. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper uses the dynamic factor model framework, which accommodates a large cross‐section of macroeconomic time series, for forecasting regional house price inflation. In this study, we forecast house price inflation for five metropolitan areas of South Africa using principal components obtained from 282 quarterly macroeconomic time series in the period 1980:1 to 2006:4. The results, based on the root mean square errors of one to four quarters ahead out‐of‐sample forecasts over the period 2001:1 to 2006:4 indicate that, in the majority of the cases, the Dynamic Factor Model statistically outperforms the vector autoregressive models, using both the classical and the Bayesian treatments. We also consider spatial and non‐spatial specifications. Our results indicate that macroeconomic fundamentals in forecasting house price inflation are important. Tests of forecast encompassing are used to evaluate one‐step‐ahead forecasts of S&P Composite index returns and volatility. It is found that forecasts over the 1990s made from models that include macroeconomic variables tend to be encompassed by those made from a benchmark model which does not include macroeconomic variables. However, macroeconomic variables are found to add significant information to forecasts of returns and volatility over the 1970s. Often in empirical research on forecasting stock index returns and volatility, in‐sample information criteria are used to rank potential forecasting models. Here, none of the forecasting models for the 1970s that include macroeconomic variables are, on the basis of information criteria, preferred to the relevant benchmark specification. Thus, had investors used information criteria to choose between the models used for forecasting over the 1970s considered in this paper, the predictability that tests of encompassing reveal would not have been exploited. To forecast realized volatility, this paper introduces a multiplicative error model that incorporates heterogeneous components: weekly and monthly realized volatility measures. While the model captures the long‐memory property, estimation simply proceeds using quasi‐maximum likelihood estimation. This paper investigates its forecasting ability using the realized kernels of 34 different assets provided by the Oxford‐Man Institute's Realized Library. The model outperforms benchmark models such as ARFIMA, HAR, Log‐HAR and HEAVY‐RM in within‐sample fitting and out‐of‐sample (1‐, 10‐ and 22‐step) forecasts. It performed best in both pointwise and cumulative comparisons of multi‐step‐ahead forecasts, regardless of loss function (QLIKE or MSE). Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The increase in oil price volatility in recent years has raised the importance of forecasting it accurately for valuing and hedging investments. The paper models and forecasts the crude oil exchange‐traded funds (ETF) volatility index, which has been used in the last years as an important alternative measure to track and analyze the volatility of future oil prices. Analysis of the oil volatility index suggests that it presents features similar to those of the daily market volatility index, such as long memory, which is modeled using well‐known heterogeneous autoregressive (HAR) specifications and new extensions that are based on net and scaled measures of oil price changes. The aim is to improve the forecasting performance of the traditional HAR models by including predictors that capture the impact of oil price changes on the economy. The performance of the new proposals and benchmarks is evaluated with the model confidence set (MCS) and the Generalized‐AutoContouR (G‐ACR) tests in terms of point forecasts and density forecasting, respectively. We find that including the leverage in the conditional mean or variance of the basic HAR model increases its predictive ability. Furthermore, when considering density forecasting, the best models are a conditional heteroskedastic HAR model that includes a scaled measure of oil price changes, and a HAR model with errors following an exponential generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity specification. In both cases, we consider a flexible distribution for the errors of the conditional heteroskedastic process.  相似文献

Previous studies found that extended futures trading contains useful information in explaining subsequent overnight spot returns. This study therefore compares the performance of using the extended trading of the TAIFEX (Taiwan Futures Exchange) index futures and single‐stock futures to predict their opening underlying spot prices. Furthermore, according to the efficient market hypothesis, the share price fully reflects all the information available and should adjust to new information instantaneously. However, several studies have demonstrated that short‐sales restrictions delay the speed of price adjustment to negative information. The relevant question is whether short‐selling restrictions also slow down the speed at which the opening spot price adjusts to the new information revealed through extended futures trading, and thus reducing the price prediction function of extended futures trading. The empirical results find that using the opening futures price and the prediction method proposed in this study can more accurately predict the opening spot price on the same day. Furthermore, the performance of using the extended trading of index futures to predict the opening spot index price is superior to that of using the extended trading of single‐stock futures to predict the opening stock price. Finally, as found in previous studies, short‐selling restrictions also slow down the speed of stock price adjustment to the new information revealed through extended futures trading. Thus both the up‐tick rule and the short‐selling bans (especially the latter) negatively affect the price forecasting performance of extended futures trading.  相似文献

Using a structural time‐series model, the forecasting accuracy of a wide range of macroeconomic variables is investigated. Specifically of importance is whether the Henderson moving‐average procedure distorts the underlying time‐series properties of the data for forecasting purposes. Given the weight of attention in the literature to the seasonal adjustment process used by various statistical agencies, this study hopes to address the dearth of literature on ‘trending’ procedures. Forecasts using both the trended and untrended series are generated. The forecasts are then made comparable by ‘detrending’ the trended forecasts, and comparing both series to the realised values. Forecasting accuracy is measured by a suite of common methods, and a test of significance of difference is applied to the respective root mean square errors. It is found that the Henderson procedure does not lead to deterioration in forecasting accuracy in Australian macroeconomic variables on most occasions, though the conclusions are very different between the one‐step‐ahead and multi‐step‐ahead forecasts. The forecasting capabilities of feed‐forward neural network (FFNN) models are compared to those of other competing time series models by carrying out forecasting experiments. As demonstrated by the detailed forecasting results for the Canadian lynx data set, FFNN models perform very well, especially when the series contains nonlinear and non‐Gaussian characteristics. To compare the forecasting accuracy of a FFNN model with an alternative model, Pitman's test is employed to ascertain if one model forecasts significantly better than another when generating one‐step‐ahead forecasts. Moreover, the residual‐fit spread plot is utilized in a novel fashion in this paper to compare visually out‐of‐sample forecasts of two alternative forecasting models. Finally, forecasting findings on the lynx data are used to explain under what conditions one would expect FFNN models to furnish reliable and accurate forecasts. This paper presents an autoregressive fractionally integrated moving‐average (ARFIMA) model of nominal exchange rates and compares its forecasting capability with the monetary structural models and the random walk model. Monthly observations are used for Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom for the period of April 1973 through December 1998. The estimation method is Sowell's (1992) exact maximum likelihood estimation. The forecasting accuracy of the long‐memory model is formally compared to the random walk and the monetary models, using the recently developed Harvey, Leybourne and Newbold (1997) test statistics. The results show that the long‐memory model is more efficient than the random walk model in steps‐ahead forecasts beyond 1 month for most currencies and more efficient than the monetary models in multi‐step‐ahead forecasts. This new finding strongly suggests that the long‐memory model of nominal exchange rates be studied as a viable alternative to the conventional models. In examining stochastic models for commodity prices, central questions often revolve around time‐varying trend, stochastic convenience yield and volatility, and mean reversion. This paper seeks to assess and compare alternative approaches to modelling these effects, with focus on forecast performance. Three specifications are considered: (i) random‐walk models with GARCH and normal or Student‐t innovations; (ii) Poisson‐based jump‐diffusion models with GARCH and normal or Student‐t innovations; and (iii) mean‐reverting models that allow for uncertainty in equilibrium price. Our empirical application makes use of aluminium spot and futures price series at daily and weekly frequencies. Results show: (i) models with stochastic convenience yield outperform all other competing models, and for all forecast horizons; (ii) the use of futures prices does not always yield lower forecast error values compared to the use of spot prices; and (iii) within the class of (G)ARCH random‐walk models, no model uniformly dominates the other. We propose a quantile regression approach to equity premium forecasting. Robust point forecasts are generated from a set of quantile forecasts using both fixed and time‐varying weighting schemes, thereby exploiting the entire distributional information associated with each predictor. Further gains are achieved by incorporating the forecast combination methodology into our quantile regression setting. Our approach using a time‐varying weighting scheme delivers statistically and economically significant out‐of‐sample forecasts relative to both the historical average benchmark and the combined predictive mean regression modeling approach. Several studies have tested for long‐range dependence in macroeconomic and financial time series but very few have assessed the usefulness of long‐memory models as forecast‐generating mechanisms. This study tests for fractional differencing in the US monetary indices (simple sum and divisia) and compares the out‐of‐sample fractional forecasts to benchmark forecasts. The long‐memory parameter is estimated using Robinson's Gaussian semi‐parametric and multivariate log‐periodogram methods. The evidence amply suggests that the monetary series possess a fractional order between one and two. Fractional out‐of‐sample forecasts are consistently more accurate (with the exception of the M3 series) than benchmark autoregressive forecasts but the forecasting gains are not generally statistically significant. In terms of forecast encompassing, the fractional model encompasses the autoregressive model for the divisia series but neither model encompasses the other for the simple sum series. This paper uses non-linear methodologies to follow the synchronously reported relationship between the Nordic/Baltic electric daily spot auction prices and geographical relevant wind forecasts in MWh from early 2013 to 2020. It is a well-known market (auctions) microstructure fact that the daily wind forecasts are information available to the market before the daily auction bid deadline at 11 a.m. The main objective is therefore to establish conditional and marginal step ahead spot price density forecast using a stochastic representation of the lagged, synchronously reported and stationary spot price and wind forecast movements. Using an upward expansion path applying the Schwarz (Bayesian information criterion [BIC]) criterion and a battery of residual test statistics, an optimal maximum likelihood process density is suggested. The optimal specification reports a significant negative covariance between the daily price and wind forecast movements. Conditional on bivariate lags from the SNP information and using the known market information for wind forecast movements at t1, the paper establishes one-step-ahead bivariate and marginal day-ahead spot price movement densities. The result shows that wind forecasts significantly influence the synchronously reported spot price densities (means and volatilities). The paper reports day-ahead bivariate and marginal densities for spot price movements conditional on several very plausible price and wind forecast movements. The paper suggests day-ahead spot price predictions from conditional and synchronously reported wind forecasts movements. The information should increase market participants spot market insight and consequently make spot price predictions more accurate and the confidence interval considerably narrower.  相似文献

In this paper we propose and test a forecasting model on monthly and daily spot prices of five selected exchange rates. In doing so, we combine a novel smoothing technique (initially applied in signal processing) with a variable selection methodology and two regression estimation methodologies from the field of machine learning (ML). After the decomposition of the original exchange rate series using an ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) method into a smoothed and a fluctuation component, multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) are used to select the most appropriate variable set from a large set of explanatory variables that we collected. The selected variables are then fed into two distinctive support vector machines (SVR) models that produce one‐period‐ahead forecasts for the two components. Neural networks (NN) are also considered as an alternative to SVR. The sum of the two forecast components is the final forecast of the proposed scheme. We show that the above implementation exhibits a superior in‐sample and out‐of‐sample forecasting ability when compared to alternative forecasting models. The empirical results provide evidence against the efficient market hypothesis for the selected foreign exchange markets. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Forecasting for inventory items with lumpy demand is difficult because of infrequent nonzero demands with high variability. This article developed two methods to forecast lumpy demand: an optimally weighted moving average method and an intelligent pattern‐seeking method. We compare them with a number of well‐referenced methods typically applied over the last 30 years in forecasting intermittent or lumpy demand. The comparison is conducted over about 200,000 forecasts (using 1‐day‐ahead and 5‐day‐ahead review periods) for 24 series of actual product demands across four different error measures. One of the most important findings of our study is that the two non‐traditional methods perform better overall than the traditional methods. We summarize results and discuss managerial implications. This paper discusses the use of preliminary data in econometric forecasting. The standard practice is to ignore the distinction between preliminary and final data, the forecasts that do so here being termed naïve forecasts. It is shown that in dynamic models a multistep‐ahead naïve forecast can achieve a lower mean square error than a single‐step‐ahead one, as it is less affected by the measurement noise embedded in the preliminary observations. The minimum mean square error forecasts are obtained by optimally combining the information provided by the model and the new information contained in the preliminary data, which can be done within the state space framework as suggested in numerous papers. Here two simple, in general suboptimal, methods of combining the two sources of information are considered: modifying the forecast initial conditions by means of standard regressions and using intercept corrections. The issues are explored using Italian national accounts data and the Bank of Italy Quarterly Econometric Model. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents a simple empirical approach to modeling and forecasting market option prices using localized option regressions (LOR). LOR projects market option prices over localized regions of their state space and is robust to assumptions regarding the underlying asset dynamics (e.g. log‐normality) and volatility structure. Our empirical study using 3 years of daily S&P500 options shows that LOR yields smaller out‐of‐sample pricing errors (e.g. 32% 1‐day‐out) relative to an efficient benchmark from the literature and produces option prices free of the volatility smile. In addition to being an efficient and robust option‐modeling and valuation tool for large option books, LOR provides a simple‐to‐implement empirical benchmark for evaluating more complex risk‐neutral models. Conventional wisdom holds that restrictions on low‐frequency dynamics among cointegrated variables should provide more accurate short‐ to medium‐term forecasts than univariate techniques that contain no such information; even though, on standard accuracy measures, the information may not improve long‐term forecasting. But inconclusive empirical evidence is complicated by confusion about an appropriate accuracy criterion and the role of integration and cointegration in forecasting accuracy. We evaluate the short‐ and medium‐term forecasting accuracy of univariate Box–Jenkins type ARIMA techniques that imply only integration against multivariate cointegration models that contain both integration and cointegration for a system of five cointegrated Asian exchange rate time series. We use a rolling‐window technique to make multiple out of sample forecasts from one to forty steps ahead. Relative forecasting accuracy for individual exchange rates appears to be sensitive to the behaviour of the exchange rate series and the forecast horizon length. Over short horizons, ARIMA model forecasts are more accurate for series with moving‐average terms of order >1. ECMs perform better over medium‐term time horizons for series with no moving average terms. The results suggest a need to distinguish between ‘sequential’ and ‘synchronous’ forecasting ability in such comparisons. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper evaluates the accuracy of 1‐month‐ahead systematic (beta) risk forecasts in three return measurement settings; monthly, daily and 30 minutes. It was found that the popular Fama–MacBeth beta from 5 years of monthly returns generates the most accurate beta forecast among estimators based on monthly returns. A realized beta estimator from daily returns over the prior year generates the most accurate beta forecast among estimators based on daily returns. A realized beta estimator from 30‐minute returns over the prior 2 months generates the most accurate beta forecast among estimators based on 30‐minute returns. In environments where low‐, medium‐ and high‐frequency returns are accurately available, beta forecasting with low‐frequency returns are the least accurate and beta forecasting with high‐frequency returns are the most accurate. The improvements in precision of the beta forecasts are demonstrated in portfolio optimization for a targeted beta exposure. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
