On the development of the GRAPES——A new generation of the national operational NWP system in China

Numerical weather prediction （NWP） has become one of the most important means for weather forecasts in the world. It also mirrors a nation＇s comprehensive strength in meteorology. In 2000, China Meteorological Administration （CMA） established the National Innovative Base for Meteorological Numerical Prediction in the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences （CAMS）, to work on developing a new generation of the national operational NWP system-Global/Regional Assimilation and PrEdiction System （GRAPES）, to enhance meteorological services in China in the new century. In recent years, the GRAPES has witnessed a fast development. The GRAPES has been set up as an integration of the model framework, data assimilation, regional and global NWP system, which can be commonly used for both operation and research. In this paper, a brief review is made for illustrating the GRAPES system, including the advanced designs of the GRAPES, its diverse applications in multi-fields, and efficiencies of the regional and global GRAPES in operational applications based on hindcast results.

A novel method to improve the performance of heatexchanger——Temperaturefields coordination of fluids

The methods to enhance the heat transfer in heat exchanger may be classified into two levels: one is to improve the heat transfer coefficient; the other is to upgrade the whole arrangement of the heat exchangers. For the second level, the performance of heat exchanger can be upgraded by increasing the coordination degree between the temperature fields of cold and hot fluids. When the temperature distributions are similar to each other, the temperature difference field (TDF) is more uniform, which means that the temperature fields are more coordinated with each other. For the cross-flow heat exchanger, rearrangement of the heat exchange surface area should improve the heat transfer effectiveness, which is even equal to that of the counter-flow heat exchanger when the surface area is reassigned optimally. For the multi-stream heat exchanger, the thermal performance is also dependent on the uniformity of the TDF, and the parallel-flow arrangement may achieve higher heat exchange effectiveness than the counter-flow arrangement, which indicates that the performance of heat exchanger depends on the coordination degree of temperature fields instead of the flow arrangement.

Volcanic tuff deposits near Daohugou village, Ningcheng County of Inner Mongolia have yielded many wellpreserved fossils. Here we briefly introduce our recent findings of invertebrates from the Daohugou fauna: mainly insects, conchostracans, anostracans, and spiders. The age of the Daohugou fauna is considered to be Middle Jurassic on the basis of an analysis of various invertebrates especially insects and conchostracans, showing strong similarities to the Yanliao fauna of north China and the Karatau fauna of Kazakhstan.

Application of annexation principle to the study of thermodynamic properties of Ag—Bi—In metallic melts

Based on the measured activities,the phase diagrams and the annexation principle,the calculating models of mass action concentrations for Ag-Bi and Ag-Bi-In melts have been formulated.The calculated results agree with practice and obey the mass action law,showing that the models formulated can reflect the structural characteristics of both melts.Meanwhile,it confirms that annexation principle is applicable to the Ag-Bi-In metallic melts.The melts involving eutectic which give rise to phase separation,and in which activcities exhibit positive deviation from Raoult‘s law is the basic cause of melts transforming from homogeneous to heterogeneous ones.
