Language and culture are highly interrelated, that is to say, language is not only the carrier of culture but it is also restricted by culture. In social anthropology,"culture"is a catch word for all those patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting. It is always a collective phenomenon, because it is at least partly shared with people who live or lived within the same social environment. Culture can be classified into several layers of which historical, regional, religious, and social cultures are discussed in this paper. Language and culture are closely related. Certain language reflects certain culture in which the language is used. As two different languages, Chinese and English have their own cultural characteristics and connotations. This paper compares the cultural connotations of Chinese and English color words to see how important the cultural background of a language is in cross-cultural communication.  相似文献

Language is the carrier of culture,and translation is a cultural information exchanging process in which the connotation of one language is expressed in the other one,namely,translation is not only the process of language exchanging but also the process of culture exchanging.To a great extent,the transform of culture information is restricted by culture factors.Therefore,in order to reappear the original flavor naturally and properly during the process of translation,one must think highly of the fact that culture factors affect translation activities a lot.This thesis transilluminates the culture factors in E/C translation through the translation comparison among the Chinese and English set phrases,idioms,allusions,sayings,and colloquialism;It also tries to analyze the way of cultural information transaction in E/C translation and put forward the opinion to it.  相似文献

Color is perception of people to the objective world.In human language,there are great numbers of color terms recording color of the world.These color terms are often used in human language.Gradually,they are endowed with rich emotional elements and cultural connotations.In cross-cultural communication,different nations with different cultural backgrounds or people of the same nations with the same backgrounds but belonging to different social classes have different perceptions of various colors.The different perceptions of colors result in a series of associative meaning of color terms.This thesis intends to discuss color terms from the following five aspects.Firstly,it deals with the relationship between language and culture.Language and culture are connected with each other.So the understanding of a culture requires the understanding of the corresponding language and vice versa.Secondly,it aims at the contrast of cultural connotations of basic color terms in English and Chinese.Thirdly,it is devoted to a discussion of the possible reasons for the diversity of cultural connotations in the two languages.Fourthly,it focuses on the influences on the cross-cultural communication.  相似文献

The correction of this problem has also been raised and several suggestions are given in the end of this paper. Vulgarism language, also named four-letter words.in English, is words or phrases of roughness and pushiness used in people's daily life. Though crude and ungrateful, it is an indispensable part of any language. It is a common way for people to express their emotions with such words. Any language in the world has vulgarism language and Chinese has no exception. Chinese vulgarism language not only exists in daily life, but in literary works as well. In English and Chinese their expressions of vulgarism language differ because of the different categories. CET4 and CET6 (combined as CETs in this paper) have played and are still playing undeniable roles in motivating English teaching and learning as well as providing a unified standard according to which most universities and colleges can compare with each other. However, in the recent years, a voice blaring their disadvantages has become louder and louder. This paper joins in the voice and expose their negative backwash effects on not only language education in colleges and universities but also on the activities of other institutions and organizations which are directly or indirectly involved in language training.
