In Toni Morrison's works ,there seems to be an eternal theme——the cruelty of black American peoples' fate and the conflict between black culture and white culture. Black culture is in an inferior position for a long time. In Morrison's opinion, the blacks can only survive in the white -dominated world on condition that they hold their own cultural root. And on the other hand, there is another way people should seek, which is to realize tolerance and compatibility of the two cultures. In this speech,Morrison again expounded the relation between the two cultures and expressed her wish that black culture could be admitted and respected by the white people.  相似文献

Like Cinderella in the fairy tale Cinderella, Carrie is beautiful, innocent and poor. But unlike the traditional Cinderella who mindlessly waits around for a handsome prince to come to her rescue, Carrie, the aspiring Cinderella, resolvedly leaves the men she ever depended on and eventually becomes a successful actress. Sister Carrie, the most impressive heroine of Theodore Dreiser, is a contradictory character. Some accuse her of realizing her ambition with immoral means. However, some others take sympathy with her courage, determination, and aspiration.
By analyzing the most distinguished quality of Sister Carrie -her aspiration, this essay is to illustrate from the perspective of feminism that women are not limited by their sex. Ignoring her own sex as well as the conventional attitude toward women in a maledominated society, sister Carrie, full of aspiration, takes an active part in creating and determining her own lives and her own futures.  相似文献

Owing to the influences of Greek's view of fate, Dorset peasant's fatalism and Schopenhauer' s pessimistic philosophy, Hardy showed more or less a pessimistic tendency in his early writings and this tendency illustrated itself in his writing of Eustacia, heroine of The Return of the Native. He believed that Eustacia' s tragedy resulted from the disagreement between her aspiration for a brilliant life outside Egdon Heath and the fate imposed on her by some mysterious force working at odds with her. This is what the paper attempts to prove.  相似文献

William Fanlkner is one of the greatest modern American writers and the Nobel Prize winner for literature in 1949. His skillful use of "Stream of Consciousness" and smart creation of the whole Yoknapatawpha County stories make him an enduring monument in American Literature. "A Rose for Emily", though short it is, is undoubtedly one of the most sparkling strokes on the monument. "A Rose for Emily" was first published on "Forum" in April, 1930; however, it can still arouse great aesthetie sympathy and inspirations today. In this novel, Miss Emily, the heroine, is depicted as a noble heiress of the Old South, a protector as well as a victim of stale southern traditions. She cut herself off society, muted voices, repressed feelings, and twisted her own heart all throughout the life in a gloomy, musky house. Miss Emily herself is a tragedy. We see her rosy youth faded, bit by bit, in that house. In this paper, analysis from stylistic perspective may give us some light in how and why the rose faded.  相似文献

Virginia Woolf claimed that the novelists should capture the evanescent moments of being and not conform to the conventional plot and characterization, since the "material" writers spent immense skill and industry making the trivial and the transitory appear the true and the enduring, but did not contain the essential thing such as life and spirit. So she advocated the modernism and carried out the experiment in her writing. The use of the psychological time in her fictions is an example.  相似文献

A Streetcar Named Desire is a tragedy.Blanche,a beautiful woman, finally goes insane. She has an indecent past. She tells lies and is indulgent in her behavior toward men.All these seem to suggest that she deserves such a consequence. However, the fact is that Blanche once was a pure girl who dreamed of true love and happy family. It is the cruel reality that results in her tragedy.Compared with her,Stella's tragedy is a tragedy of toleration.Unlike Blanche,Stella prefers to tolerate when confronting with the reality. The tragedy of Blanche and Stella is typical of the time in which women cannot enjoy the same rights as men.  相似文献

Sediment cores from desert lakes serve as good records of the frequency and intensity of sandstorms in history. By multi-proxy analysis of grain-size, magnetic susceptibility, TOC and Rb/Sr ratio, the paleosandstorm characteristics and lake evolution history in Yulin Area for the past 80 years, are discussed in this article. It is revealed that Hongjiannao Lake formed in about 1928 A.D. and in its initial stage sandstorms were prevalent with three extremes taking place in 1936 A.D., 1939 A.D. and 1941 A.D.. During the expansion period of 1952-1960 A.D., inflow waters to the lake increased sharply and a lot more weathered materials were carried into the lake. The frequency and intensity of sandstorms have reduced a lot since 1960s and the "double peaks" feature of the grain-size frequency curve has changed into the "single peak" feature. Study on the catchment ecology of the lake shows that the occurrence of sandstorms has been effectively restrained by the forest plantation and water and soil conservation.  相似文献

People in our country know Eileen Chang mainly as an outstanding writer and literator. In fact she is appreciated more than being a writer internationally.Yet Chang’s outstanding talent as a trans1ator is known very 1ittle in mainland China. This thesis selects Eileen Chang’s translation phenomenon as the object of study. Mainly because at first, the translator is of course the decisive factor that makes the target text equivalent to the source text, and case study of outstanding translators obviously is a very important part of both translation theories and practice. Among the factors influencing translation, the subjectivity of the translator is the key one. For a translator who is also a writer,his/ her writing view influences his/ her translating ractice. Eileen Chang’s writing view is inflected in her translation of The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. In my thesis, I would analysis her skill when translating the Old Man and the Sea. I found that she reflected her own attitude to the life when translating the novel.  相似文献

It is well known that to learn a language means to learn how to communicate with others. But in the author's eyes few Chinese teachers think that to learn literature means to learn communication as well. The author explores the inside relationship between literature and communication in her thesis. She analyzes some great works of postmodernism to show different kinds of communication in order to enable both teachers and students of English to pay even greater attention to literature as a medium of communication.  相似文献
