Brief introduction to the State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research (SKLEC)

The State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research (SKLEC) located in the East China Normal University (ECNU), Shanghai, was established on the basis of 30 years'studies on estuarine and coastal sedimentary dynamics and dynamic geomorphology at this university. Professor Chen Jiyu (an academician of Euro-Asian Academy of Sciences) and Professor Dou Guoren (an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, CAS) are advisors of SKLEC academic committee. Professor Wang Pingxian (an academician of CAS) is the chairman of the academic committee, and professor Shen Huanting and Professor Su Jilan (an academician of CAS) are the deputy Chairmen. There are now 14 professors, 7 associate professors, 3 lecturers, 5 technicians and 1 administrator in the Laboratory, and Professor Ding Pingxing is the director.

Tsinghua Alumnus Academician Wu Zhengyi Won 2007 National S＆T Top Award

The annual national science-technology award ceremony was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on January 8, 2008. Renowned botanist Wu Zhengyi, a Tsinghua alumnus, and petrochemical scientist Min Enze won the 2007 State S＆T top awards for their outstanding achievements. Chinese President Hu Jintao and other senior leaders including Wen Jiabao, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, and Li Keqiang, attended the ceremony. Chinese Presi- dent Hu presented the award to two scientists. Botanist Wu, 91, has been engaged in botanical research and education for 70 years. The botany professor, also a CAS senior academician, graduated from the biology department of Tsinghua University in 1937 and later became director of the botany institute of CAS.     

Tsinghua Research Achievements Win 2007 State Science and Technology Awards

Seventeen Tsinghua research achievements recently won 2007 State Science and Technology Awards. Tsinghua professors accepted the awards on January 8, 2008, in Beijing at the annual National Science-Technology Award Ceremony in the Great Hall of the People. Tsinghua＇s research achievements ranked first among Chinese universities. Of Tsinghua＇s seventeen awards, one was a State Natural Science Award second prize; eight were State Technological Invention Award second prizes; and eight were State Scientific and Technological Progress Award second prizes. Altogether nine research achievements were completed by Tsinghua as the lead research institution in collaboration with others.

The plasmonic coupling of metal nanoparticles and its implication for scanning near-field optical microscope characterization

Researchers at State Key Laboratory for Mesoscopic Physics and Department of Physics, Peking University （PKU）, have recently shown that an otherwise forbidden longitudinal surface plasmon mode of a gold nanorod can be excited by normally incident linearly-polarized light if it is coupled with a nanoparticle with proper plasmonic resonant frequency, volume, and composition.
