On Distinguishing Features between Phrasal Verbs and Verb Phrases

English phrasal verb and English verb phrase are two different notions. Strictly speaking, a phrasal verb is a form of idiom, but a verb phrase is a free combination of English words. According to lexicology, they belong to two different categories: word class and phrase, meanwhile, the structure of them are also different: the former is made up of a verb and an adverb or a preposition, the latter is made up of verbs and/or object, complement, adverbial and other constituents. The author in this paper concentrates on the structure, semantic and stylistic features of phrasal verbs, and hopes it can help to grasp and employ them.
