A Discussion of the Research on the Ballads of the Period of the May 4th Movement

In 1918, Peking University started the movement of collecting ballads, and then intellectuals began to make a lot of researches on ballads, paid much attention to folkways, used folk literature and folk customs, and established a new-pattern national order through academic historical imagination and literary construction. However, as some of the intellectuals, like Zhu Ziqing and Zhou Zuoren etc., thought more deeply over the common peoples literature and nation, their attitude towards the masses became more and more contradictory.
