Abstract:The homogeneous solution of the differential equation for the shear lag in thin walled box girders is taken as the displacement pattern of finite element. Based on the variational principle, a finite segment method is proposed for analysing the shear lag in box girders. This method is simple and practical, and can be applied to box girders with varying depths. The results calculated by this method are compared with the experimental results as well as with those obtained by the finite strip method, and good agreements are found.
