Elastically Supported Shear Walls with Step Changes in Stiffness

The present paper is the extension of a previous one on shear walls~[1]. Elastic supports are replaced by a story of walls with equivalent flexural stiffnesses. The wall stresses are then analyzed on the assumption that all the walls subjected to lateral loads deform in an identical configuration. The cantilever moment due to loading is distributed at every floor level. There will be unbalanced moments at some floor levels. They are brought into equilibrium by moment distribution in the vertical direction. The process continues until the balancing moment becomes negligible. One or two rounds of computation usually yield satisfactory results for practical purposes. The elastic supports cast their influence on the wall stresses within a height of three or four stories.
