Determination of Preliminary Layout for Embodiment Design of Planar Lower Pair Mechanisms

The embodiment design of a mechanism needs a preliminary layout. The determination ofthis preliminary layout follows the kinematic design phase. The issue concerning the preliminarylayout is seldom discussed in the literature' In this Paper the basic concepts of the preliminary layoutare discussed. Three criteria are proPOSed to determine a preliminary layout of a planar lower pairmechanism. The paper also shows that the determination of a preliminary layout with the proposedcriteria may facilitate the late activities in the embodiment design process for a planar lower pairmechanism. An algorithm with the computer program is developed.
