Abstract:Based mainly on the Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology, Volume 1 (1984),strain S3-3 which was isolated from Shungdao saltern pool in Liaoning Province was identified. It possesses characters common to Halomonas, but some others are different from known species of Halomonas. It has amylase, but no Kovac's oxidase and ornithine decarboxylase. Strain S3-3 grows anaerobically in medium with KNO3 and produces gas from nitrate medium. It can utilize malonate and liquefy gelatin. The type of utilization of carbon and energy sources, and the test to the susceptibility of antibiotics are also different. The G+C mo1% of DNA of strain S3-3 differs from known species of Halomonas, as well. But the binding degree of DNA between strain S3-3 and Halomonas elongata ATCC 33173 closely related to strain S3-3 is 32%. So, strain S3-3 is identified as a new species of Halomonas and named Halomonas shungdaoensis sp. nov. Strain S3-3 is considered as a type strain.
