可持续发展观念是一系列现代思想观念的概括，对促进当前地理教育的改革和发展具有指导性意义。而地理教育由于自身的特点和优势，在对公民进行可持续发展意识教育中担负着重要责任，现代地理学研究中的人地关系、可持续发展是地理教育研究的中心课题，对于学生正确地理解地理环境的结构及其发展变化、了解人类与地理环境的相互作用等都具有重要意义，必然引起地理教育思想的转变、教学内容的更新和教学方式方法的改革。
