Abstract:The goal of engineering design is to satisfy requirements of clients. Thus the analysis and the realization of clients'requirements are central to design. Because of the subjectivity and the diversity of clients' requirements, the requirementanalysis in designing appears to be one of great difficulties in building intelligent computer-aided design (ICAD)systems.In this article, the concept of value is introduced into developing ICAD systems for engineering design. It is argued thatvalue is the nature of various requirements. It is pointed out that although various clients' subjective requirements assumedisorderly and unsystematic manifestations, they follow certain objective rules in the sense of value. Various subjectivefactors and objective ones which dedide value relations and evaluation criteria in desgning are also investigated.Consequently, the work prasented in the paper is intended as the basis for developing universal and rational ICADsystems.
