The stories written by Zhang Ailing attach great importance to the exposition of the significance of life. Under this theme, three characteristics emerge in her writings. First, the subject matters of her writing are always far from the mainstream of the time, and they are limited within ordinary people's ordinary life. Her skills in telling these stories are natural. Second, the protagonists in her stories are correspondingly mediocre people. Third, seeing through the essence of the life, her stories have a flavor of tragedy, but at the same time, because of her identification and love with the life, unlike the classical tragedies, her stories can be called soft tragedy.
