Abstract:In this paper, surface alloying of 45~# carbon steel with chromium andmolybdenum using CO_2 laser has been investigated. Through analysis of thethe phase structure, it has been shown that the structure of alloyed layeris principally cell crystal, the growth direction of cell ctystal is alongthe opposite direction of thermal current and has an evident preferredorientation. There exists small composition segregation between interiorand boundary of cell crystal. Because the alloying elements diffuse tothe interior and to the boundary of substrate grains at high temperature,the metallurgical combination of alloyed layer and substrate has beenrealized. The phases of alloyed layer include martensite, ferrite, residualaustenite and Mo_2C carbide. Through measuring the Content of residualaustenite, it can be seen that the content of residual austenite increaseswith the increase of the scaning speed of the laser beam. There is auniform distibution of alloying elements in the alloyed layer.
