A New Automatic Test System for Measuring Magnetic and Mechanical Characteristics of Magnetic Disk and Head

For the measurement of the magnetic and mechanical characteristics of the magnetic disk and head according to ISO-3562 and GB-2948-82, apart from the high accuracy positioning system, the spindle system and the read/write system, the most important one is the super-high-speed A/D converting system. A normal high speed A/D converter cannot be used because its coverting time is too long. A new double convertint method using a scan converter tube ST-100 is described. The system is capable of catching the reading waveforms on real-time base after erasing, then writing into an IC high-speed acquisition memory. After the next period of digitization, the digitized signal is sent to the interface. All procedures and read/write levels are controlled by a singlechip microprocessor. The new converter is capable of sampling 512 points independent of input frequency.After receiving the data, the master computer provided with IEEE488 interface will select by menu the executive utility and complete the following tests: 1. amplitude; 2. positive and negative modulation; 3. extra pulse; 4. missing pulse; 5. erasability; 6. resolution; 7. overwrite and other iteme.The new system can also be used to write a standard CE disk to measure the write current, half-amplitude-width and to measure the mechanical characteristics of magnetic disk.
