A Study of Shitang Moon Sister Song in Renhua County of Shaoguan

Without music accompaniment and being various in singing modes, Shitang Moon Sister Song （SMSS） is a unique singing art form popular among female villagers in Shitang Town of Renhua County in Guangdong Province. SMSS features as simple and vivid words, covering universal themes and various functions such as education, entertainment and folklore beliefs. SMSS is of well-defined verse structures featuring in their seven-character-sentence, four-sentence-stanza and multi-stanza strophic using the same music tune. Deeply influenced by Shitang local dialect, SMSS＇s melody is natural and beautiful,with different music rhythms which tend to be narrative. Owing to its unique history, special requirments of singing time and location, functions, content, singing forms and folklore beliefs, it＇s obviously improper to put SMSS into the category of ditty. It holds that MSSS belongs to Folklore Song and Narration Song.
