Abstract: | Summary Strict anaerobic conditions and the production of methane have been demonstrated in the proctodeum in larvae ofOryctes nasicornis L., a xylophagous coleopteran. In ruminants, the breakdown of cellulose by extracellular symbiotic organisms is complete and leads to the formation of by-products which may act as substrates for methanogenic bacteria. |
