| 摘 要： | 齐灵渥斯在《红字》中一直被视为恶魔,整个角色旨在开展疯狂的个人报复,而这种强烈、极端的恨也最终毁灭了自己。以读者的角度细读这个故事分析得出,齐灵渥斯这种毁灭性的报复不合理也不合逻辑,而是作者有意设置。在此分析上对齐灵渥斯的角色在小说中的效用进行全面探讨,试图还角色一个客观、公正的定位。

| Abstract: | Chillingworth has been viewed as a devil in The Scarlet Letter,whose role helps to carry out the crazy personal revenge and finally lead to self-destruction.The essay,from the view of reader,argues that the destructive revenge of Chillingworth is unreasonable and illogical,which is designed intentionally from the author’s part.Based on this analysis,the essay will explore all-sided efforts of Chillingworth in the novel and try to present an objective and just role of the character. |
