Abstract:Some physiological reactions were examined on wheat seedlings undernatural drought and osmotic treatment of PEG.With the increase of str-ess time and osmotic concentration,growth was inhibited;the ratio ofroot/top(R/T)increased.With the decrease of tissue water potential,outer--osmotic quantities of electrolyte and soluble carbohydrate increased rap-idly and both of the varying patterns were completely consistant.In wheatroots,the osmotic treatment of PEG had no obvious effects on the activityof invertase,while in leaves it raised the activity dramatically.The ac-tivity of roots examined with TTC reduction method declined rapidly un-der water stress.Two wheat cultivars,heshangtou(drought-resistant)andGanmai 8~#(drought-sensitive)were used in the present study.Althoughtheir physiological reactions under water stress had a similar varying pa-ttern,the range of physiological reaction in heshangtou less wide compa-red with that in Ganmai 8~#.Therefore,the former cultivar showed lar-ger capacity in preserving water and greater physiological stability thanthe letter one.
