Abstract:A dynamic programming procedure determining the optimal decision policy of diameter sequences of buried penstocks of hydroplants is introduced in this paper. The penstock diameter sequences must satisfy the restraint from water-hammer pressures. While there is no reasonable method to solve this optimization problem. So, the calculation of optimal decision of diameter sequences under the water-hammer restrained condition is mainly discussed, which may be suited to all types of penstocks. The optimization procedure without considering the abovementioued restrained condition is also presented. The present method can particularly be used in penstock CAD systems to improve the design.
