Abstract:Heavy metal in sediments is one of the key issues for environmental and ecological protection in coastal areas. Note that the value of inter tidal area as the most important and sensitive indicator for the ecological health in Deep Bay system, Shenzhen, this study presents a special investigation of heavy metals in inter tidal wetlands therein. Sampling was conducted at 9 locations in April, June, July and September respectively, 1998. Through the experimental analysis of samples, sediment characteristics such as particle size distribution, total heavy metals and their speciation with particular attention to bio availability were investigated for Cu, Zn, Cr, Pb and Ni, respectively. Meanwhile, the spatial and temporal variations and accumulation characteristics of heavy metals in wetland sediments were discussed in connection with the interrelationship between speciation. A simpler method for measuring bio availability was used, which is more efficient with equivalent accuracy with the conventional Tessier step extraction method. It is found that the heavy metal pollution in the concerned inter tidal area is relatively heavy and probably responsible for the slight degradation of wetland ecosystem in recent years.
Keywords:wetland   Deep Bay   sediments   heavy metal   bio availability
