Abstract:An integral equation method. (IEM) for analysing the static behaviour of laterally loaded piles is developed in this paper. When the linear subgrade reaction model is employed, whether the coefficient of the subgrade reaction is constant or varies linearly or parabolically or arbitrarily with depth, the lateral displacement of the pile can be expressed as the solution of the second kind of Volterra integral equation. The widely used constant-methods, m-method, c-method and the others are unified by solving an integral equation. The pile displacement and internal forces can be obtained by directly computing the integral equation. The proposed method is clear in concept, convenient in calculation, accurate in results, and versatile.
