毛纶、毛宗岗所理解的“叙事”脱胎于传统却又超越了传统。他们不再固守真实地再现史实的叙事规范而追求事件的艺术传达。他们认为：叙事是作者在传达各种真实或虚构的人事之时的匠心运营行为。其特点是从作者的角度考虑本文的控制。与西方的“Narrative”相比。他们抓住的是其中备受冷落的部分——叙述行为。

MAO Lun and MAO Zong-gang's narrative theory is originated from the traditional narrative, but at the same time, it surpasses the traditional one.
