| 摘 要： | 通过对情态动词意义研究主要观点的分析和比较，根据认知语言学中的认知语义学理论和隐喻、转喻理论提出了隐喻和转喻对情态动词理解的这一解释机制，从而尝试解决情态动词几个义项的内在关联。认为隐喻和转喻共同导致了英语情态动词的语义扩展，同时隐喻和转喻也能很好地解释同一个情态动词多个义项之间的内在关联。

| Abstract: | Through comparison and contrast with relevant views on the meaning of English modals, it is proposed that both metaphor and metonymy play a role in the semantic expansion of English modals according to relevant theories in cognitive semantics and gives detailed information about the process of English modals＇ semantic expansion. The interrelationship between the meanings of English modals is explained. |
