Abstract:In this paper,a new method by the polarization dependent loss(PDL) of FBG for transversal force measurements is proposed,which is different from the traditional method by peak shift of reflection spectra.A theoretical model depending coupled-mode theory is built and numerical simulation is also carried out.The results of numerical simulation suggest that the RPDLeff of FBG is more suitable for measuring transverse force in the low pressure region due to its greater sensitivity.A series of experiment on FBG under different transveral force are designed to examine how to demodulate the force by PDL.Under the force conditions of 0~50 N,the height of the peak can be used to measure the force.When the force exceed 50 N,the width of the peak obviously increase and can play a part in the demodulation.The result of numerical simulation and the experiment are agreement,which demonstrate RPDLeff is a good method to measure the transveral pressure.
