The BreedingHabits ofElapheDione

From 1975 to 1986,169(female 82,male 76,baby 11)E.dione were cap-tured in Northeast China for examinations. Amongst them 33 were bred snakes.82 wereeggs collected,in which 69 were hatched(84.1%of the total).The hatching period were33 to 43 days.The young snakes can drink and catch soon after hatched out.The way ofcatching is to snap tightly,wind and squeeze,then to find the captured head and swallow. E.dione begins to eat a large number of meals in the next summer.The eating amount offoods reach to the climax in June and July. The more the young snake eats,the greater is itsincrease in weight and length.If foods are sufficient,the young snake is apt to live andgrows normally.
