A Combination of Rebellion and Personal Ambition--Analysis of Julien's Character

F. Stendhal is one of the most famous writers of critical realism in the 19th century. In his novel "The Red & Black", he revealed the pursuit and rebellion of the common intellectuals who belonged to the lower middle class through the fate of the hero Julien. Julien Sorel is a person with a contradictory character. He has the common people's sense of rebellion, but he also has a very strong personal ambition. His character is affected by the social environment of that time and his tragedy is decided by his contradictory character. This paper mainly analyzes the two aspects of Junien's character.
