On the Diverse Roles of Hu Shih in His Translation Activities

Hu Shih has made remarkable contributions to translation in China ever since the Neo-cultural Movement as he has advocated vernacular literature and literary reform, positively leading to the interaction of literary translation and creation. He has not only played important role in translating western works, but has left brilliant thoughts on the history of translation, translation criticism and translation theory. In addition, he has been very important initiator of translation activities, cultivating translation talents in some translators.
