Abstract:The genetic transformation in a medical herb, Salvia chinensis Benth, wasstudied with recombinant Ti plasmid. Different parts of the plant such as leaves,petiole segments and stem segments were used in the transformation. The Ti plas-mid contained NPT II gene coding for neomycin phosphotransferase as well asoctopine synthetase gene(ocs) used as the screening marker. The transformedplant tissues produced adventitious buds and formed whole plant on the selectivemedium. The leaf discs of transgenic plant also grew and regeberated normally onselective stressing. The transformation frequency was up to 16.4% under an appro-priate condition. The tolerance to kanamycin and the presence of octopine-like pro-ducts indicate that exogenous gene had been transferred into plant cells and stea-dily expressed in transgenic plants and the G1 generation. In addition, examina-tion the different parts of transgenic plants showed that this plants were origina-ted from transformed cells but not the chimera.
