Abstract:In this paper, the author has found a problem concerning the stipu-lations of equivalent total gravity loads with base shear method that is stipu-lated in The Aseismic Design Code For Buildings(GBJ11-89). The equivalent total gravity load is defined by multiplying the total gravity load represen-tative value by equivalent mass coefficient 0.85 for multi-degree-of-freedom systems. On the basis of analyses and sample calculations, it is found that the coefficient of 0.85 is a little bit smaller for two and three-degree-of free-dom systems, especially, the difference is larger than 10 percent for two-degree-of freedom systems. The coefficient is proposed to be 0.95 when base shear method is used to calculate the horizontal earthquake effects for single-story factory building with different roof levels.
