指示语可分为人称指示语、时间指示语、空间指示语、语篇指示语和社交指示语。隐喻是人们对抽象范畴进行概念化的有力的认知工具。人们常常把熟悉的、具体的概念域投射到抽象的概念域上,以便认知抽象概念域中的一切,其中包括指示语。

On Cognition of Indexical Expression

Indexical expression falls into five kinds: personal indexical expression,time indexical expression,spatial indexi-cal expression, textual indexical expression and honorifics. Metaphor is "the telling tool of the notion that people conceptualize abstract categories." People usually project familiar,concrete ideational domain on the abstract ideational domain,so that they are able to cognize everything in the abstract ideational domain,including indexical expressions.
