Abstract:The study of metaphor lasts for more than two thousand years. Traditional study of metaphor is part of poetics and rhetoric. Metaphor studies have broken the area of rhetoric, and metaphor is considered the basic pattern of human cognition in nowadays. This paper introduces the function of metaphor, elaborates the influence of metaphor on language and its cultural connotation. Then it explores the applied linguistic significance of metaphorical theory on teaching.
