From Rhetorical Image to Value Orientation:On the Art of Rhetoric in Morrison’s The Bluest Eye

The image "the blue eye",which in fact is a metonymy as well as a pun,plays a vital role in Toni Morrison’s first novel The Bluest Eye.This rhetorical image functions at three levels in the novel: at the level of rhetorical devices,it acts as an effective way to construct the utterance,then at the level of rhetorical poetics it acts as an effective way to construct the text,and finally at the level of philosophy of rhetoric it involves in constructing the value orientation as well as the being of the characters.Consequently,the rhetoric in this novel is not only a kind of technique,but an art.
