The Appreciation of English Alliteration

Language is the carrier of thought, it depends upon sound to express. When people try to get the combination of its communicative function and its aesthetic value, they finds that language has the equality of music, which requires us that we should choose rhythmic words to achieve appeal while speaking and writing. Alliteration is one of the often-used phonetic rhetorical devices. It refers to the repetition, usually, initially of a sound that is usually a consonant in two or more neighboring words or syllables. Alliteration is not only used in literary books but also widely used in our daily life, such as in news report, advertisement, political slogan, tongue twister, proverbs and idioms. It is because that alliteration has the functions of being concise, showing contrast, keeping rhythm and deepening impression. The proper use of alliteration can get the music quality and a powerful expressive effect.
