A PRELIMINARY DISCUSSION ON THE HISTORY AND TECHNOLOGY OF SYMPLOCOS CAUDATA IN SONG DYNASTY

In the history of ancient Chinese dyeing, the wide use of Symplocos caudata as a raw material for dyeing only appeared in the Song Dynasty. This paper expounds the origin of the term Symplocos caudata and the reason for its being used a lot in that dynasty, and points out that the popular You colour in the Song Dynasty was black purple while Symplocos caudata was only used as a mordant in dyeing. It discusses Symplocos caudata as a mordant was used in Yellow dyeing and You dyeing. In addition, it clarifies about other terms in history, which are liable to cause confusion.
