Abstract:Based on the close reading of Coetzee's novel Disgrace, the allegorical meanings and political discourses embodied in such recurring images as the unaccomplished opera, disserted dogs, the bloody nightraares and the unfired gun were unveiled from the perspective of post-colonialism. It was argued that the opera Byron in Italy which Professor Lurie failed to complete parallels his own perplexed life; both Lurie and his daughter Lucy have respectively found their identifications on the disserted dogs; the bloody nightmares represent not only the physical tortures but also the traumas imposed upon the defenseless; and finally, the unfired gun symbolizes the loss of the colonizers' last dependence.
Keywords:Disgrace  Post-colonialism  Allegorical Interpretation  Unaccomplished Opera  Disserted Dog  Nightmare  Unfired Gun
