Influence of Pragmatic Presupposition upon Utterance Understanding

Verbal communication is an interactive process involving utterance production by the speaker and utterance understanding by the hearer, with the latter being a key point in successful communication. This article begins with the definition of pragmatic presupposition, through a conversational analysis of examples taken from literary works, and makes it clear that pragmatic presupposition both inhibits and facilitates utterance understanding.
