Treatment of Myelodysplastic Syndromes with Combination of Chinese Traditional and Western Medicine

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a heterogeneous group of clonal hematopoietic disorders characterized by ineffective hematopoiesis resulting in peripheral cytopenia leading to transfusion-dependent anemia, an increased risk of infection or bleeding, and a propensity for development of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The prognosis, co-morbidities and age of a patient must all be considered when deciding treatment strategies. The advanced age of the majority of MDS patients limits the therapeutic strategies often to supportive care measures, including hematopoietic growth factors, red blood cell or platelet transfusions, and antimicrobial agents.To address these shortcomings, much effort has been directed toward the development of novel treatment strategies that target the evolution and proliferation of malignant clones.In the theory of traditional chinese medicine ,there are mainly 3 pathogens to ITP: deficiency of qi and yin and blood stasis.
