Identity and Negotiation:Shehuo Performance during Chinese Lunar New Year Days at Jiezi Township

As one of the most important cultural symbols with regional characteristics, Shehuo is a popular conventional performance held regularly at specific time during the Chinses Lunar New Year Days in Tianshui area, Gansu Province. It is usually organized and conducted in a range of a township, and presented as a traditional posing show that selects the highlight of a classical story of Shaanxi Opera or other traditional legends to represent. It is by organizing and performing Shehuo that performers and audience, who share a common repertoire, express and communicate their perception towards tradition, community, relationship among villages, joy, and supernatural beliefs. Meanwhile, it serves a resource and an entrre for people, who are heavily affected by the mass media and popular culture, to represent themselves, to negotiate cultural and local identities.
