Abstract:It is common that industrial wastewater contains 2,4,6-trichlorophenol(TCP) and sulfate simultaneously.Biological reduction is an effective method to remove the pollutants in the wastewater simultaneously.Pyruvic acid was used as an external electron donor to reduce TCP and sulfate in this work.TCP and sulfate removal rates increased with the increase of pyruvic acid added when they were biodegraded alone.TCP and sulfate removal rates decreased with the same amount of pyruvic acid added when they were biodegraded simultaneously, due to the competition for electron donor between TCP and sulfate-degrading bacteria. The competition for electrons could be relieved when the amount of pyruvic acid was further increased.
Keywords:sulfate  2,4,6-thrichlorophenol(TCP)  reduction  biodegradation  electron donor
