An Analysis of the Characters＇ pursuit in Morrison＇ s ＂Song of Solomon＂ in the light of its Biblical Namesake

＂Song of Solomon＂, published in 1977, was written by the African-American female author, Toni Morrison. The title of the novel is lifted directly from the Old Testament Biblical book of the same name. The biblical ＂Song of Solomon＂ is ascribed to the first millennium king of Israel, King Solomon, and portrays an idealized notion of the relationship between a bride and her bride-groom in their zealous pursuit of eachother＇s love. Living in a country with over eighty percent Christians, Morrison＇s background, culture and world were strongly influenced by Christian values. What then is the allegorical meaning that Morrison intended in naming her book after the Biblical text of the same name？ This paper seeks to analyze characters＇ zealous pursuit of their ambitions within the light of its Biblical namesake, and by so doing seeks to contribute to a further understanding of Morrison＇s work.
